Road race engines and drag race engines are two different engines with two different power and torque bands.
Maybe you might asking nicely about the lode profile? That cam may have more intake at .200, .300 and .400 lift then most big profile cams have at .500 and .600 lift. and why it has so much power with only a .570 and .559 lift cam on semi stock 243 heads.
243 heads with only minor porting and polishing "in the right places" produce lots of usable power and torque.

Former Vendor
I've had a set of LS6 heads done with the 2.02 valves and they made more power than the current AFR,TFS and ETP's on 346ci's. So I could see an engine dyno putting out 600hp.In car it would probly do 500-530rwhp which is stout for a 383ci.

CRD Engines
and I am sure Katech could as well
Have a look at the VTS on the SWGT C5ZO6 and the SWGT C6Z06( non 427)
http://www.world-challenge.com/competitors/vts.php
You might be surprised what those engines produce even after the air restrictors are put in front of the tb.
Here is a 243 head that will get one close.
http://www.lingenfelter.com/store/88958622.html
These heads are used in the SWGT corvettes.
over 300cfm at .550 lift - puts many of those 'stage 3' heads to shame.
Maybe someone can enlighten us on the difference between air Volume vs. air velocity though a set of heads?
Comes down to what do you want and what are you going to use your engine for? Then what is your budget and double it.
Detail? Bling

The original ones had some extra aluminum welded on for strength, which still did not hold up. IIRC these where fixed, but dont expect to go a whole season on a set. Might get three - four races according to several SWGT engine builders.

600 does sound like a lot for a 383. I know LT1's are weaker, but I have a 383 LT1 with a slightly larger cam, and fully ported heads, makes about 500 fwhp.
