Default The failure at Mid-Ohio last weekend

As suspected, the optispark let go again. However, unexpectedly, it was not at the place where the rotor broke when Randy and I put it back together.

EDIT:The original failure was the MSD rotor, the screws came out and the rotor was just floating. We installed a stock one to make it through the race, but obviously didn't...

Pretty typical failure:

Take a look at the bottom side of the rotor - it's melted where it must have been running along the inside of the housing for awhile before letting go. I guess that must be why it was missing before stalling.

Summit Racing has already sent me a replacement at no cost without having to receive and process the bad parts first, so hats off to them. I will continue to give them my business.

I'm writing a letter to MSD but haven't sent it yet, we'll see what they can offer me since two of their parts failed during the same build in May. I'll reserve slander or praise until I see a response.

Rut Roh, I just bought a new MSD opti.

From what I've been reading I need to take it apart and put some locktight on the factory screws, or some other measurement to make sure they don't back off.

What a pita to pull out and replace.

That's exactly what failed on mine the first time, I guess I should have said that in the first post for those that weren't there. The MSD rotor screws backed out and the rotor let go. It was intact, just not spinning anymore and the little plastic locating pin had sheared off. We put a stock rotor back in to get through the race. Or at least the first 8 laps...

I'd recommend putting loc-tite on yours if you want to be sure, but in a less modified motor it may be ok. I run up to about 6700 RPM in mine.

That sucks. Best reason to move up to an LSx engine is that freakin' opti.
