Default Discovery Channel Canada Mean Machines show finally aired in the states....

The Discovery Channel Canada show that I was invited by GM to drive a '07 Z06 at , I guess was finally aired in the states sometime recently. I dont know if it will air again, but I found a video link to the show....

http://www.racingfilm.com/video/2953...allenge-Sports

Remember the results were padded to help the Ferrari since the 430 and its owner backed out of the show at the last minute...

Somewhere around 12:15 in the video , you can see the Ferrari cheat the brake test by braking 40-50 feet early.

I dig the video that they show twice of the Z06 exiting turn 9 @ WSIR with the "candles lit". skating at 100+ is a riot

Anyhow, I know some here were interested in seeing the show and were never able .....'til now.

Danny, thanks for posting the link to the video. A little fancy editing makes it look closer than it was. You did a great job. Thanks for representing Corvette so well. Come back to Willow Springs when you can put more laps on the "Fastest Track In The West".

At the 14:42 mark:

"The Corvette wins the challenge by just 3.3 seconds!"

by just?

Heck, that's almost enough time to use a sundial!

16 seconds slower on the 2.5 mile course? Equal drivers would have kept this gap much smaller.

Granted the Z06 is the faster car as many of us have personally experienced on various tracks, but you still need a good pilot. How about a little credit to Danny who clearly was the better driver in this challenge as well.

I think that video was pretty well done. IMO, the one thing that the video *didn't* bring out was the ability of the two drivers. DP was right at the limit "the squeal of tires announces the Corvettes tires are having a hard time in the corners.." while the Ferrari driver hardly ever got the tires to talk.

To the viewer it looks like the 360 hit the brakes a bit early, but I doubt I could have done it any better.

What I thought was interesting was the way the narrator "analyzed" the results. A 36.16 vs 39.9 second win by the Corvette on the short course was "the Corvette wins by just 3.3 seconds", which is ENORMOUS (not to mention bad math)! The skidpad win by the Ferrari was "the Ferrari wins by 10%", instead of 0.1g (again bad math).

But the killer was the long course. 1:38.4 vs. 154.0!! WOW, what a difference! I was expecting the 'Vette to win, but not by that margin.

The other thing I really liked about the segment was the friendly nature of the competition. If y'all had as good a time as comes across in the clip, it was a good day for everybody.

Thanks for sharing, and have a good one,
Mike

Had this test been C5 Z)6 vs 360 then the 360 might have had a chance.

But combine the C6 Z with a competant driver and you had the perfect recipe to serve the smug Ferrari crew a couple slices of humble pie - we knew the 360 was not match fo rthe C6 Z, but I am sure that many Ferrari fans dont want to believe that Corvettes can be quick aorund corners.

The F430 vs C6 Z would have been interesting to see, because I do recall doing a few laps while an F430 was circulating, and it was fast...

The event results were scewed often, the only ones that were not manipulated somehow where the 60-120 accel test and the standing start lap of WSIR big course.

I know this because we had four extra eyes and hands and 2 stopwatches running redundant timing ( thanks George and Janet ).

The brake test was manipulated by the driver of the Ferrari and you can visually see this on the show (12:15). The skid pad results were manipulated ....During practice I recorded 1.2 g's (I manipulated the front roll coupling ) and the show personnel saw this when they cleared my driftbox. The Ferrari driftbox was never shown in the show, and no one every saw it. I was .1g less during the competetion, but they knew wha tI had done in practice. Janet and George were timing the circles that we made and had both concurred that the Corvette was faster around the skid pad .....

The slower tighter event they still let the Corvette win, although when we were practicing that course , George and Janet said we were 6.5-7 sec faster than the Ferrari, and we were both consistant with practice times during the competition. Somehow the Ferrari lost 3.5 -4.0 sec.....3.6 seconds would still be 3 calender pages at an autocross which is what it basically was. The Ferrari driver looked and drove like he had never run an autocross before.....

Actual Timing lights and displays would have solved all of this, but it was their show. Another thing of note is that the 60-120 accel test it took the Ferrari 5-6 attempts to get this handled in the space provided. The Corvette only made one attempt and I was on the brakes at the end of 3rd gear will before the end of the alotted area....

What ever it was still fun. They wouldn'y have had a show or story if the Corvette would have won every event (but we did ).

The F430 would have been obviously more formidable competition, but it/they would have still lost..........

Danny, obviously this is no fault of your own but that finished show has to be one of the worst comparos I have ever seen.

I can't tell you how sick I am about hearing that the only reason domestic cars are fast is because of the big motors, they can't go around corners, etc. etc. I'd love to take a challenge like that and smash that 360 in my frigging Camaro SS! It's why I don't watch Top Gear..............

I particularly took offense to the statement about the Corvette being well known for poor handling. It was clear that the 360 owner continuously underestimated Danny and the car. I'm surprised they didn't make the Jeremy Clarkson comment about oxcarts and plastic panels.

Great job Danny!

Oh Lord, that was funny!

I knew the outcome without watching. I kinda felt sorry for the Ferrari guys. It was like watching them get their pocket picked by a professional.

Good job, Danny!

What about fuel mileage? Half the displacement over the Vettes "massive 7 liter engine" does not equal half the fuel used. Figure that one out.
