Default How much are you paying for shipping on tires

I just tried to buy (4) Hoosiers from a forum member and he said Fedex quoted him $400 !!!

I recently bought 4 new Hoosiers from the Tire rack and the shipping cost was just over $80.

I also shipped 4 Kumhos to another member and the shipping was about the same, under $90.

Since the guy I was buying the tires from (315x17 = 25 Lbs each and a "package size" of 25x25x11) was quoted so high, I chose to use my account and after filling out the form the total came to $96 for the 4 tires.

I sent the labels to the fellow with the tires and he took them to Fedex where he says they went back to the $400 charge.

I have hauled DOZENS of packages to Fedex for shipment that I prepared the form and labels on line and they have NEVER re-weighed or re-measured any box, package, tire or etc.

Has anyone had a similiar experience, or had to pay $400 to ship (4) tires from either coast to the midwest ???

I'm almost afraid to go look for Hoosiers elsewhere if it's going to be so darned expensive to ship !!!

go to the UPS site, and type in fuel surcharge. you'll be shocked.
also, if it is not boxed up, there is a surcharge.

FedEx Ground is best, price will be better if they can be strapped/bundled in pairs and if you can ship to a business address rather than a residence

high volume businesses like Tirerack get a big discount as compared to somebody who doesn't have an account paying the full boat shipping cost so comparing their price is not a true reflection on what you can expect for used tire shipping from an individual

I'm fortunate to use my employer's business account and address for shipping/receiving, they get a significant discount and just deduct it from my pay

I'd also be surprised if a 315 tire will make the quoted dimensions above, they'll catch undersized dimensions and ding your CC with an adder, if it's even an 1/8" over they'll bump you to the next inch size and cost 26 x 26 x 12-13 is a more likely number

FedEx stores will always charge a TON. Odd that they wouldnt let him use your labels though.

Have him slap the labels on the tires and call FedEx for pickup. ($7 fee I believe)

I just 4 tires and rims sent from Cali, to Detroit and it cost $180 from Fed Ex. I did see the weight that they had it listed and it said each wheel weighed 11 lbs. I think they are really about double that.

That has NEVER been an issue (at least w/ Fedex), I've moved quite a few tires over the last couple of years and none of them have been boxed.

Just remembered that I've bought two sets of wheels from House of Wheels - Florida to Nebraska and the ship charge was $180 or less.

I still think there's something way wrong with the $400 Fedex charge.

Same exact tires for about $300 MORE than 2 previous shipments less than 45 days ago ???

Default Shipping Costs

I recently had 4 Hoosiers shipped to me from the New York area for a little over $100.00. They were shipped by DHL. Just an FYI, Hoosier Tire West has free shipping on new tires.

I've been shipping tires USPS and it can range from $22 to $35 depending on location, dia. of tire, and weight of the tire. If they are close by the bare tire can go priority and I had one shipment arrive in two days. I've gotten tires from CA and I'm in WI, USPS has done well with this!

THANKS for all the replys -

I knew I was pretty much right on thinking that it costs in the $20-25 range to ship a bare tire.

I just wanted to hear from others, because I know $100 per tire is nuts and it's NOT what most of us pay to ship.

THANKS again

air freight is probably $100 per tire.
you can also strap them to a skid, and truck them.

I know, I know - the point here is, I e-mailed (4) labels. All that was necessary was to attach the labels and DROP OFF the tires at ANY Fedex location.

Between Corvette parts, tires and stuff on Ebay, I've done the above 100's of times and Fedex has NEVER done anything but scan in the pre-labeled package (or tire) and handed me a reciept.

After all the hassle I'm thinking the guy simply decided he didn't want to sell and the "$400 shipping" was an easy way to get out of the deal - I did get my $$$ back so it's not really bad.

Now I need to decide what tires to run for the upcoming NCCC one lap "hi-speed" event on Labor Day.
