Default Please help with engine rebuild plan!!!

As best as I can tell, I cracked a piston ring in #8 at VIR Thurs. Car was running so awesome. I was hanging with a new Viper ACR for about 5 laps before it went. I am selling the supercharger kit to fund my rebuild. I daily drive my car but I try to track it about once a month or even more if I didn't have to repl clutches, and radiators and brackets and motors. Any thoughts on what a solid bullet proof engine set up would be. TIA!

I rebuilt an LS motor - new ARP rod bolts, new caddy lifters, new Comp valvesprings, new ARP head bolts, etc. - spent almost as much as a crate engine with a litte stronger bottom end. Go with a crate...

If you do rebuild - there is nothing wrong with a stock LS6 depending on what you are going to do with it...

A crate LS2.
A crate LS3

Choices of LS2 400HP($5795) LS3 430HP ($6195) or LS3 480 HP($6495)
but
you need to change to 24 reluctor ring
and buy harness adaptors (approx $150)

A crate LS6 405 HP (approx. $6000). Maybe less, you just have to locate one.
no changes necessary.

A forum vendor short block LS6 (approx. $3000)

Unless you are building for a very specific class or need or have to have lots of HP it is difficult to beat the dependability of a crate engine.

I saw your car a couple of weeks ago at Williams Performance when I went to get mine. I tried to convince my wife that putting decals on mine would be a cool, but she didn't buy it. She asked it I would get money to put them on, and when I told her no, that was the end of it.

I am hoping to get the head off tomorrow nite and see if it is something simpler like a valve or gasket, but I am not holding my breath. Hopefully the sc kit will sell quickly as there seems to be plenty of interest. That will give me a better idea of my budget. I read about people doing this all the time on the forum, I just can't believe I am now one of them.

That was mine you saw over there.

It's back at the house now, and ready to rock 'n roll!

Heck, I've got to do something to beat you.

While at Road Atlanta in August, unbeknownst to me, my fan wasn't running while I was sitting on grid waiting for practice. The engine got real hot and later that day after qualifying, and before the race, I was checking over everything I noticed a little oil in the water. No water in the oil, but I was concerned even though the car was running fantastic.

Instead of taking a chance and blowing the engine, I put it on the trailer.

I sent an oil sample to Blackstone and they said the oil appeared ok.

Then I took it to Williams and we discussed what the options were. It could be a blown head gasket, or cracked head or a lifted head when it got hot.

So, instead wasting money on tearing it down, I decided to get a new GM long block. They installed it for me, and I'm ready to go back on track.

I have the old motor sitting in the shop at Roar Racing. I talked to a fellow forum member who will buy it after he inspects it for damage.

No problem. No secrets were involved. (as long as you don't mention the supercharger you saw them installing)
