Clunking Konis?

Clunking Konis?
Anyone out there have an issue with their Koni sports (SA yellows) clunking? Car is a 2004 Z06. Konis have about 13k on them. Already tried disconnecting the FSB so it's not the endlinks. All upper and lower control arm bolts are properly torqued. No bushing walk-out in the front end. There is a clunk from both sides of the front end when going over bumps, especially noticable at low speed.
I've had Konis clunk in other cars but only when they've been converted to DA's.

I had a problem with my Koni's on my C5Z with the lower bushing pushing out of the eye which caused a clunking noise. I sent them back to Koni and they sand blasted the inside of the eye and reinstalled the I bar. That helped some but still need to keep a watch on them.

When one side squeezed out a bit on my 3013's......I switched sides with the shocks and so far no problems......
John.....sounds like you might want to send those shocks to koni.....
Also might want to pick up a set of the stock 04 shocks...if you don't already have them
as back up

Dave, I disconnected the FSB and the clunking was still there.
I have the stock shocks off the car (2004) so I guess I'll throw those on today and see if that solves the problem. I was really resisting sending the shocks back to Koni... grrrr..

I put the stock shocks back on. No clunking anymore. The Konis look fine and the installation appeared proper. No bushing walkout or anything.
I guess I'll send them in to get rebuilt, but they have so few miles on them I can't believe that would cause a clunk.

Did you buy your shocks new?
As you lower the car you loose shock travel and it makes it easier to bottom out the shock causing damage to the shock. Where is your ride height set on your car?

They came on the car along with a set of stock (2004) shocks. Car has 22k on it, shocks have maybe 7k on them.
The car is not very low. Rear lower arms are parallel with the ground at rest and the car is set up with 1-2mm of rake. However when I picked the car up, the front was very low. I'm wondering if the shocks are damaged as a result.
At this point I really have no choice but to send the dampers back to Koni and have them looked at.

You might want to check to see if the ride height bolts have been modified or changed. Here is a picture of what the oem bolt and a aftermarket bolt looks like. The other picture is of the front Koni on a C5Z which shows how much shock travel was left after the ride height was lowered all the way down with the factory bolt. As you can see there is not a lot of travel. The rubber shock bump is suppost to help protect the shock from damage. If the car hit a big even chuck hole it still could damage the shock.
