Default Help With C4 Wheel Bearings

I know everyone is probably sick of the same topic. Everyone is looking for a good track wheel bearing.

I have done some searching but most of the good detailed threads that come up are older. I need wheel bearings on all four corners that can hold up to track days as well as street driving. I did read about the xx amount of street miles to break in a bearing and such but Im not sure if the brands talked about before are still good ones. Timken and SKF were the most talked about. I can find Timken at a pretty good price from Rock Auto but does anyone know where I can find SKF bearings at a good price? Are these two bearing types still reputable for a C4?

Thanks

AC Delco bearing will hold up to track days?

Also, they only have the rears for my car. They only fronts they have are '91-96. What changed in '91?

Vansteel in Florida has the superior roller bearing design.

SKF Bearings are sold at NAPA. IIRC, the NAPA-branded ones are actually SKF. Can't attest to the reliability of AC Delco bearings on the track, but at $100, the price is definitely right.

I have the Timken front bearings from Rockauto for my 87. They are marked Made in USA. So far, they have worked for 2 seasons of autocross and some track days running slicks.

Thanks guys. I think I will run the Timken in the front and AC Delco in the rear. If the AC Delco ones fail I will try Timken in the back aslo.

The roller type fro van steel are way more than I want to spend on bearings. I am still in college so I have to keep this on a budget.

Default Vansteel

I spoke with Vansteel a month or so ago. At this point in time they are disappointed with the experiment on the new tapered bearings. They only sold rears hubs. The suppliers was not able to produce the fronts for some reason. The rears were popular for awhile and they sold a bunch. Then they have had quite a few warranty returns. Call them directly for more information.

Guess I am one of the statistics at VanSteel. I never got any of the rears tapered rollers to hold up for more than three track days. I am currently trying Timkens on the rear and have gone back to GM (AC Delco) on the front. THe SKF from NAPA lasted one day. My fronts are lasting a season. If you think the VanSteel bearings were expensive, call your local Chevy dealer for the rears. I was just quoted $486 each which did not include S&H of course.

WOW!! I guess the AC Delco from Corvette Recycling is an awesome deal on rears. Unfortunately they dont have the fronts for my '90 so I'll try Timken.

MRC24X had a similar experience to yours with the VanSteel bearings, his rears lasted only a race or two. Luckily he told me before I bought a set for myself. VanSteel was happy to replace them and the customer support was good, but until proven otherwise this is not the route to go.

I've simply come to terms with the fact that C4 bearings are wear items like tires or brakes. I replace the rears every three or four weekends, it really doesn't take long to do the job now. I buy them from MAC auto, do an ebay search. I think the rears are only $75 apiece. The fronts are more, but they last longer - maybe a whole season.

From my readings, it sounds like one of the problems is keeping the bearings greased. The bearings used by the ZR-1 endurance team that set the 24 hour speed record were allegedly standard AC/Delco Bearings but with synthetic grease. Some called these heavy duty hubs. So it sounds like if someone could ever come up with a way to re-grease these hubs we "might" be set?! Until then we need to stock pile extra bearings...

Is there a place we could drill a hole for a grease fitting anywhere?
