Hydrogen Embrittlement isn't so much a factor with aluminum. The problem with chrome wheels will be the stress risers that a nick in the chrome (or when the plating peels away) can cause. It is definitely not a good idea to chrome your aluminum wheels.

I am sure they're glad that this happened there and not once out on the highway.... that could've brought on alot more fire trucks...

I'm not convinced the blame for a break like that goes to chrome. We all know there are a gazillion (math term) chrome rims driving around.

I raced 4 years on AFS chrome sawblades & no problem except the chrome pitted & peeled. That's with r comps.

FWIW

i put my money on : one too many curbs hit firmly in the past. or cheap poorly built aftermarket rims.

I have a chrome sawblade that looks just like that. It was used when I started using it for autox in 99. Paved , banked,1/2 mile circle track with BFG R1 tires. I spun out for no reason & had that for a rt rear wheel.

Just bought oem sawblades this winter for the track, not chromed though. Now I'll be wondering if these things will hold up incase it's a sawblade thing?
