Default Kumho MX vs Yokohama ADVAN Sport

Looking for autocross/street tires on stock C5 (non Z06) sizes 245/45/17 front 274/40/18 rears to be mounted on OEM '01 thin spokes. Car will be driven to and from events with occasional weekend cruising. Running strictly for fun and hopefully some bragging rights; local WSCC events have an appropriate class (D1). Budget calls for Kumho MX, $830 out the door, mounted, balanced, while the Yokohamas will run $1275. The MXs have a 220 wear rating while the Yokes are at 180. Will I be $445 dollars happier with the Yokes than the MX's? Don't want to even consider A6/R6/Victors/Nittos due to street driving requirements.

I had the Kumho MX tires on a previous car and they were pretty loud on the streets but their dry Grip was very good!. I used them for a couple track days with great results and would recommend them. On a side note I was even stuck in a snow storm with them and i'm still alive!

I've got DAQ on both MXs and the new Kumho XS, and the XSs are simply the quicker tire. Unlike the MXs they do get greasy when hot, but they are still faster than the MX. In C5Z sizes, XSs run $1,000 from the 'rack. I think MXs were $900.

Of course, the Dunlop Direzza Star Spec and the Bridgestone RE-11 might be faster still, but they don't make those in the sizes I need.

I can go into more detail and post up graphs if desired.

Might take a look at the Falken 615 I think it's better the the MX when autox, but can't speak for the ADVAN

MXs are on my C5 right now. I'm very happy with them.

Never had the Advans (don't know anyone who has), so I can't comment on them.

I think that Kumho came out with the XS to compete against the Falken 615. Either of those tires would be good for a stock tire class.

I have run the MX for street, track days, and some autocross but once the tires got to about 50% tread, they took a long time to warm up and they did feel greasy after awhile especially with track use. From what I had read, 50% tread life is about where the compounds in the MX are about gone.

I have had 3 sets of MX's, good tire for the money, but as mentioned get greasy when pushed hard. I was gonna try the new falken 615s, or the new xs but the wait was too long, instead I got the Nitto's NT05. Think first track event will be april.

Can't speak for the Yokohamas, but I have MX's on my C3 right now. The first time driving my car, the local autocrossing champ lapped my 'Vette only .1 sec slower than his Victoracer-clad Miata that he typically wins events with. He was 3 sec. faster than me.

I guess I have a lot to learn about driving...

What sizes would you run on the stock C5 rims for either the Kumho XS or Falken 615. XS has stock front size but not rear. Didn't see stock sizes for front or rear for Falkens.

Here's a good tire size calculator

http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp

For the Falken I like the
255/40R17 Front
295/40R18 Back
