The car may have aero on it in a couple years, so yes, if I go that way I will upgrade to the more powerful pump. I don't like to do jobs more than once, lol. Anything I can do to get more life out of this one? Pump seems to be fine on the street, not that that is anywhere near the load placed on the pump by an autocross course and sticky 305's though.

The ONLY thing you can do is do a complete flush with Redline PS fluid. That MIGHT help if anything will. I have done it and it will get it along for a little while.

I guess I can give it a shot. I read some where that you couldn't bleed it. That sounds ridiculous, there has to be a screw somewhere right? I guess on the rack?

Take a turkey baster and suck the reservoir empty. Fill with Redline. With the front wheels in the air, crank the car, and turn the steering full left and full right for about 30 seconds or more. Shut down the car, suck the reservoir empty. Fill with Redline and repeat the cycling. Do this until the reservoir only shows good, clean, red Redline fluid. Make take a full bottle if it has never been done.

Redline might get you by for a while but the stock ps pump/rack are really not track worthy.

Take the rack return line off and put it in a pan. Lift the front end off the ground and turn the wheel back and forth with the engine off until it all comes out.
The baster method won't get it all.
I took the line off at the cooler and did it.
When it's empty, put the line back on and fill the reservoir. Turn the wheel back and forth again to pump the air out. Start the engine and do the same, turn left and right. Keep the reservoir at the proper level.
Drive it and check again, your done.

Which is more often the culprit, the rack or the pump?
I switched over to redline last winter, but the whine is back. Normal driving I don't notice anything. When i come off the track it sounds like my car has an old twin screw style blower on it. Lots of RPM dependent whine.
I figure that I could easily do the pump over the winter. Replacing the rack feels like a bigger project.

FYI - TurnOne is out of Corvette pumps right now. They're having a supplier issue and waiting on some parts. You'll have to send your pump in for a rebuild. (I sent mine in last week.) Tell them that you want the "track car" build, which gets you higher pressure, lower temps, and reduced hp consumption. Definitely get the new billet pulley as well.

I will have a small disagreement with my friend Fastfatboy, as I wore mine out (the pump) doing autox mainly. Some could argue that autox is harder on the pump and rack than track (constant turning at high rpm - top of 2nd gear). The Redline may get a lot of guys "by" but if you are really pushing it hard, once the miles accumulate the seals give it up on the stock setup.
Just my 2 cents.

If you wear it out it's like wheel bearings and such. Seals failing is a product of heat, get the cooler into some air and it will last longer....not necessarily a "bad" design.
Just my opinion.
I have auto crossed my car but it's mainly a track/street car.

In my opinion "wearing the pump out" is not necessarily a "problem" like the LS3 oiling issues, LS7 valve issues or the C7 Z06 cooling issues.

I would say near the end we went through far more racks than we ever did pumps. Around 2010 or 2011 GM stopped offering NEW racks through the parts dept and the only thing you could get was rebuilt racks and we had a lot of issues with those blowing out the inner seals. We went from keeping one spare in the trailer to 2 or 3 on hand for a single weekend.
