Default Brake piston retract tool

There was a thread awhile back where someone asked for a picture of my 2x4 tool. Here it is:

It's just a 2x4. It works very well though! I also use it as a chock for the wheels when torquing the lugs. Put it behind or in front of the tire so the car doesn't roll a little bit when you tighten the wheels up.

This procedure gets two thumbs up. Ready for the season to start!

It's nice to see someone using their head and not their wallet! I've used my trusty 2x4 for a long time (I think I'm on my second one). It is also great for holding the front rotors still when changing the studs.

The 2x4 gets both pistons too.

Channel-Locs for me, too. As you say, definitely a multi-tasker.

Default My tool

I changed the six individual pads on the front of the C6Z06 last weekend (without removing the caliper). I used stuff already in my toolbox to retract each piston and slide the padlets into place. It worked pretty well and directed the force on the piston straight in (vs. at an angle). The leverage point was at the extreme outer edge of the rotor so no risk of damage there. Sorry - I didn't think to go get a camera and take pics at the time.

High tech tools = a wooden paint stir stick and a C3 door hinge spring tool (just a bent screwdriver - I'm sure a straight one would probably work too).

I use this neat little $7 tool I found at Kragens. I put an aluminum block between it and the cylinder to prevent damaging the piston.

I just use a big screwdriver to pull the caliper forward (which forces the pistons in) before pulling the caliper.

I used a large c-clamp until I read about the two screw driver approach. Quick and easy.

Need to head out now and do just that.

The 2X4 looks to be an easy way if the caliper is already off.
