Default timing cover?

I pulled my crank seal to replace it with a new one and had no idea there is a lip cast into the timing cover hole where the seal is. Its on the back. Kind of like a stop for the seal, but with the seal installed flush with the front it doesn't need to be there as I see it. That being said, my seal puller grabbed it and broke it. The lip is only about .043" thick. On old school timing covers I don't ever remember there being a lip there. My question is should I replace timing cover or is the lip unecessary. If not needed I could simply grind it smooth.

thanks,
-V
