Dust boots burning up at the autobahn
So i was at the Autobahn this friday for my first time out this year, and i was running my new carbotechs on my stock brakes on my C5 Z06, and my dust boots for the sliders on my front calipers burned up pretty bad, and i was wondering what i can do to prevent this or do i need to replace them on a regular basis.

No, you do not need to replace them often, just make some of these. It is a piece of .062 aluminum with the hole in it that is the diameter of the base of the taper. Works perfectly, and is much better that header wrap.

It works perfectly. I was going to make them, but figured that it is so easy, anyone can do it.
Edit:
Sorry, I missed the point of the post about that boots on the slide rail pins. For those, well, I have had a consistent viewpoint on this forum about all slide rail calipers.

I think he is talking about the dust boots for the brake caliper pistons?

Not directly related to the OP, but I've had good luck with the polyurethane-style boots on my tie rods. They don't crack, and I had to mutilate the stock boots to get them off so I could re-lube the joint.
On the downside, they don't seal all that well either. It wouldn't surprise me if they were letting a good amount of dirt get in there. I would bet Gary's solution is the better one; without heat shields the poly boots might get hot enough to liquefy the grease inside of them (though mine seem ok, I don't frequent brake-intensive tracks).
I've personally experienced most of the terribleness of the OE brakes without ever melting the sliders. These calipers are just... ugh.

Most true racing brake calipers don't use dust boots on the caliper pistons. Not really needed as the calipers are rebuilt or replaced frequently. If your car is just for track use, you can run without the dust boots on the caliper pistons,,, no problem

I wish I would have known you were there Friday, I would have said hello and had you over to the garage. I was running my C6R and Black T1 car.
Autobahn is a very tough track on brakes. Being a technical track and no long spans to for cooling, makes it a real strategy.

I guess I'd just leave them off and clean/relube the pin when installing a new set of pads. Or take them off for track events when doing brake prep.

Cost a LOT less than new calipers
or I'll take your old ones & recycle them.

Have not advertised these much but we have been using them for a long time.
