How do you know if tires were shaved?
I recieved 4 new Nitto 555 R-II tires from discount tire last week. Noticed that the rears 305-35-18)have less tread than the fronts (275-40-17) but both looked brand new. I certainly didn't pay them to have the rears shaved, but would shaving leave any marks? Is there any way to tell other than the depth?
The depth on the rears is maybe 4/32 in some places; I'll have to take a more accurate measurement. Anybody know what the depth should be as received on 305-35-18 Nitto R-IIs??
Thanks,
Andy

The tire manufactures websites have all sorts of good info on them. 305/35r18 555RIIs should be 5/32nds. 275/40r17 is molded to 6.3/32nds.

Thanks, I didn't find anything on discount's site for the tire other than 6/32 regardless of size. I will have to measure again accurately; I was just surprised at how close the contact surface is to the wear bar on the rears.

You can definitely see if a tire has been shaved. The rubber tread will have marks on it where the shaving or truing blade has cut rubber away. Also look to see if the tires have those little protrusion sticking out like all new tires do. If you are seriously tracking your corvette then you dont want a lot of tread as that will heat up and possibly come off in chunks.
