Default L88 Le Mans Corvette Estimated to Sell for $500 - 700k?

A 1968 Corvette L88 'Scuderia Filipinetti' Le Mans Race Car will be sold at auction during the big Monterey Week this August. The pre-sale estimate is a jaw-dropping $500 - $700,000... Could that be true, especially in this economy?

Could be. Unlike a number of the pretender collector cars that are either ones that were never driven or are restored totals this car actually has historic value and has verifiable documentation to prove it.

It depends if there are 2 bidders who really want the car.

Last year a Jim Garner/Dick Guldstrand '67 racing corvette sold for $744K

All the heavy hitters will be there. The question is how light have their wallets gotten after the crash? /:\

I'm selling the Greenwood Spirit of Sebring '75 at Monterey as well. It will be at Russo and Steele. I ran it at the last two Monterey Historics and a bunch of other events. Great car, but I'm hooked on vintage GTP now.

I got an email from R&S announcing the sale and I thought it was your car. IIRC, aren't you the guy that owns the Red Lobster March?

the car is worth more than that and actually reflects the down market. Couple of years ago it would have fetched a million or more. Amazing history car.

A car can't possibly be worth more than the market value. Think about what you just said. A car is worth what people are willing to pay for it. That is the market value. The buyers set the market value.

This has been a tough year for race cars. The Grand Sport may have sold for far less than anyone ever thought. It's hard to tell since it never met the reserve at the auction. The old Gulf car took a big hit at the Mecum auction in Florida.

The Montery auctions could be a good indication of what's happening with the Obama recovery plan. If people start buying expensive race cars then the optimism is back. If no recovery is in sight then prices are going to stay low.

The interersting thing is that the million dollar plus market is strong. Look at the Dusenburg prices. Once a car gets over several million the market seems strong. It's the sub-million dollar market that's weak.

Nice seeing the history of the cars being recognized.

Yup, great picture. I'll be driving it at Monterey and Coronado. It's got a Chevy small block so it's relatively cheap to rum. I've also got a Nissan GTP that John Morton will drive at Monterey. We should be testing it at Willow in a week or so. Some of the internals of the Turbo Nissan 6 in it are Chevy racing stuff.
