Default Please Help Me Pick a Race Seat

I am looking for a race seat to replace my broken factory drivers seat in my C4. I was at an autocross and the side bolster on my sport seat broke right off mid corner!! I am looking for something relatively inexpensive (around $300-400..?? ) that will fit in a C4 with the parking brake and no major changes. I dont know what widths work. Its ok if its one piece and doesnt recline as long as it provides some sort of cushion for street driving, so no all plastic or fiberglass. I dont need to keep the power rails, and wouldnt mind about and 1" of more headroom. Any input you guys have would be great!

I like to drive to the track so used Corbeau A4's in mine. They recline and adjust with double locking sliders.

I got the perfect deal for you Mike. Just buy my C4 racer and I will throw in the 2 original World Challenge seats for free.

They are cool, both bolt right up to my stock 6-way power seat tracks and are way lower than stock. I get in, snug up and then run the power seat up more to really hold me in.

The one came with my car and the 2nd one Pancho found at Carlysle for me and it cost me an arm and a leg. But, I got 2 original matching seats that are a cool piece of history and are comfortable. LG will remember these seats when he raced WC back in the day. Heck, he may even have one laying around to sell you!

I have been thinking about selling this car again and putting the money in my T1 car and go full time to NASA ST2 with all the goodies.

Aaron

Aaron

I would love you buy your car!! It would save me a lot of time and money in the long run. However I do no have that kind of money now. I will trade seats with you though! That way your not seatless when you sell the car.

Aardwolf

How well do the A4s fit and do they hold you well while racing?

I have an Ultra-shield alum. seat in my C-4.
They are in your price range, comfortable enough for limited street use,
will provide great support, at least an extra inch of head room, & will fit with the E-brake up to at least 17" wide.
I have the 15" road race version in my car. I am currently tipping the scales at a whopping 170lbs.

One of the best road race seats for the buck, IMO, is the KIRKEY intermediate road race seat. Good side and shoulder support, nice covers and if you add the containment top you will have a good, safe, cost effective system.

Both of these look a little to "hard" for street driving. I will be doing a little more than "limited" street driving. I found one from Corbeau called the FX1. The Pro size is 17.5" wide, has very similar dimensions to the A4 mentioned earlier, and the description says it was designed for street use too. It seems to be priced well enough too. Any opinions?

I have the Kirkey intermediates in my C4. IMHO, you are right in the fact that it isn't a very street friendly seat. They are AMAZING on the track. I just did 9 30 minute sessions at Summit point over 2 days and I'm not a bit sore. I also have no e-brake and the 17" barely fit. I amlost needed a sledgehammer on the passenger side. I'm using 3/8" thick side mounts. One other note, I am 6'0 and there was no way that I could fit with a helmet in the Kirkey mounted on the stock height power track. I sit relatively straight up compared to many so I'm sure that's a part of it. Whatever you do, make sure you measure closely. The big door sill takes up way more room than you might think. Somebody might correct me, but I don't see how anything bigger than a 16" or a 17" at most would fit with the factory seat belt mounts and e-brake still in place.

Don't buy a metal seat unless you plan to support it because they will bend and fold in crashes. Stick with an FIA legal plastic seat if you go unsupported. Think carefully about a dual use seat. The OE seat was designed as part of the safety system and DOT has certifications for a reason. It is really easy to take a stock seat out when you go to the track its about 4 bolts.

I really like the Kirkey as well but wanted to keep recline. The A4 shows as 19.5 on the base and it barely fits. I think the FX pro at 20 would fit but I'm not sure on the rest.

I'm around 6'3" and I had to lower the bracket and have the seat base shaved. Now I have headroom with a helmet on.

Does anyone have a forza or FX1 Pro in their car near Cleveland I could look at? I think those are the ones im debating between. The Forza cause the but area is a bit wider for my big butt, and its cheaper, but it might not fit. I found some older threads where people said the Forza fit their C4 if they took the plastic cover off the parking brake.

I've got the parking brake removed, it was extra weight. And the cover off the stock belts, that helps a little too.

I have a 6 speed so id like to keep the parking brake. While i have the old seats out Im going to take some measurements. I was just hoping for some advise from people who have used the seats Im looking at. I dont know if I want the A4 or not but I know it fits your car so Im using as a gauge for other seats.

Well i measured the opening in my car and in order to maintain the parking brake I need to stay within 20" at the base. The FX1 Pro is 20" so it will be tight but I think it will work. Unless anyone else has any other recommendations?

I looked at taking the cover off the belts. Do things get caught in yours and do they retract properly?

My drivers belt gets hung up all the time. I'm constantly pulling the cover off and futzing with the retraction mechanisim.

One day I'll pull it out and make a perm solution to guide the shoulder loop so it doesn't get hung up in the mechanisim. I think this would be your only problem with removing the cover.

One question - if you tossed the eBrake mechanisim how much space does that buy you?
enough to put a 22" in there????

I would think A 22" would be darn close. I cant say if it would fit or not.

Does anyone know of a dealer that sells Corbeau seats somewhat close to Cleveland, OH? I would really like to sit in one of these if Im going to buy one. I hate to put it in and go wow this sucks!

The A4 at 19.5" looked to me like the max that would fit for that kind of seat. A fixed one could go a little wider since you don't need to reach the recline lever. My belt does get caught on the retract lever sometimes but it's easy to fix. Pix:

Not much room!

Thanks! That was actually a big help. The fixed seat is 20" across so I think I should be ok. Would you mind doing me a big favor Ardwolf? Could you measure how much room you have from the outside of the shoulder bolsters to the door when its closed? The FX1 is 2" wider in this area so if there is an inch or more ill be good. Thanks
