C6 Z06 shifter problems?
I have replaced my 04 Z06 Shifter with an 08 C6 Z06 shifter. I really like the way the new shifter works, HOWEVER, I do seem to have a problem since the replacement. Occasionally I can't get the shifter to go into the 1st/2nd part of the gate pattern. ie It ONLY wants to go into 3rd or 4th, so you really can't get moving from a stop. This has only happened twice, from a stop both times. Originally I thought that I had a misaligned shifter (so I rechecked it), but on second thought, I think I may have a malfunctioning CAGS relay???
Can anyone who has replaced a shifter, OR who has had trouble getting their shifter into 1st and 2nd (and FIXED it) please let me know their thoughts and opinions on this?
Thanks,

Garrett, what car is this in? I'm not sure how this would work in a 1963. I'm assuming you have a c5?
I'd strongly suspect misalignment unless it locked out 2/3 only at low throttle.

I did the same swap three years ago and had the same problem it was the alignment they are very touchy. Make sure the car is dead flat when you adjust. Good luck

I did this in my c5 early this year, my buddy at work did his c5 too, neither has had an issue- maybe we got lucky, but I just put it in neutral, pulled the old shifter, put in the new, released the pin on the new shifter. -Dan

Thanks for the response guys. As an update, this has only happened three times (so far). Twice on the day I changed shifters, and once the day after. In all 3 cases, the engine was warmed up, and I had just backed out of a parking place. It's been five days (knock on wood) and it shifts perfectly, and hasn't hung up again. When I say "hung up" I mean that the shifter would not pass over into the 1st/2nd gate (like CAGS), except that I was stopped in neutral and the shifter would select all gears except would not pass far enough to the driver's side to enter the 1st/2nd gear area. I hope that it has worked itself out, 'cause I really like the way it shifts. I'll let ya know.

Curious- is CAGS still active on your car? If it's unplugged it's unlikely that it is causing the problem, probably just need to adjust the shifter in neutral again. -Dan

The rod from the car needs to be in neutral when doing this as I'm thinking you already figured, but there is some play in neutral. I think what LanJet is refering to is leveling out the keyway so you are in the middle of neutral on the rotary motion of the rod in the car. Hope that makes sense.
