Default Need help with air tool

My IR 1/2 drive gun has "died". All other air tools work so it's not air press/volume relateded.

It just stops spinning even though it's got full pressure at the hose.

If I disconnect & reconnect it'll gun for a few sec's then shut down again

It's about 5 yrs old used weekly but not commercial.

It's like a valve or seal or something inside get's stuck & then the disconnect/reconnect makes it work for a few secs.

Do you think I need a full rebuild kit or just go after the part that's messing up?

Anyone ever rebuild these, seems like a pretty simple tool.

I have used the conditioner oil weekly, so it's not dry or sludged up.

TIA.

Try adding 8-10 drops of air oil in the end of the air hook up. See if that helps.

If it does, a simple disassembly and cleaning may work.

As a machinist, I use air tools. I add a couple drops of oil in the morning and after lunch to my air tools. Even my cheap die grinder has lasted for years.

Sounds like one of the phenolic wipers(vanes) in the motor. They are rebuildable. Search the interwebz for a schematic...

My $0.02 worth - if you are going to tear it apart to find out what is wrong, just rebuild the entire thing. Not that much more labor and you will have a "new" gun when finished. It is a PITA to fix one part and have another go bad in 6 months and have to tear it apart again.

I do that almost every use, also I forgot to add, I bleed off moisture weekly (or more if I use it a lot) from the compressor.

Thanks.

I am thinking trigger, as when it does go dead the trigger is stuck/pushed in & does not pop out unless I disconnect/connect air supply.

Anyone have a source for rebuild kits? I assume it'll include trigger parts.

I think I have it figured out. At the top of the air inlet there is a valve (rubber) that is all chewed up. The throttle (trigger) moves against that valve to "feather" the power up/down. I ordered a part & we'll see if she works, called IR support to diagnose, very nice company.

That's usully a cure for "neglect" but figured I'd add an easy 'hope to fix'.

Good to hear it's probably a simple repair.

It was the throttle valve seat. The IR help line said that it MIGHT have failed because I was using straight air tool conditioner (it's like atf fluid) instead of 10 wgt oil (recommended).

I don't know, the part is brass with a rubber or plastic like seal/cover over the brass.

I guess I'll alternate between conditioner & 10 wgt.

I have also "heard" to use only conditioner (as I was doing) and it'll never "gum up"

What do you guys use?

Also are the vanes supposed to alternate in direction? They fit in the slot of the rotor either way. IIRC mine were alernating in direction (they are a different shape on the ends)

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

IR help line says the vanes can go in any way at all, all one direction or all the other, or alternate, etc.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Put them back in that way & gun works.

Thanks.

Gotta do brakes/rotors for a DE next week.

Embarass some PCA guys (I hope).
