Default What happened to my brake cooling duct hose?

This is what I found when I took off my RF wheel. I haven't even driven the car or had it on the ground since this was installed - I was working on the other side and saw my new rotor wasn't straight, so I went back to check the RF rotor and saw the duct hose was torn up at the stock duct exit, but the wheel hadn't even been rotated other than me spinning it by hand. It looked like I was going to have to adjust the hose but never had a chance to check it with weight on the front end. It didn't seem too tight at all, I purposely made sure I had extra length, but I can't image why this would happen. It tore behind the zip ties that hold it to the duct exit. If I did something wrong I want to be sure I don't do it again on the other side. Any thoughts?

there is not room for hose in there.
there is a reason DRM makes a kit to do this.

Just from the last picture at full right, it does look like it's stretched pretty tight.

Yeah, you can't do it that way. You gotta have the actual duct installed.

Two things. First, you can't just run the hose from that "duct". That's a generic duct to route air into the wheelwell. You need a duct that runs up into the inside (nearest the engine) of the wheelwell. Second, that type of hose isn't very durable.

Get a real duct and then purchase some SCAT hose. The SCAT is more durable, is silicone impregnated and has the spring inside the hose. The stuff you have with the sping on the outside and the cloth tears very easily where the spring contacts the cloth under pressure and "cuts" the cloth.

Pics of SCAT.

Pics of proper duct (Z06), spindle duct and the same cheap hose (before I installed the SCAT).

Hope this helps.

you can use a high quality hose and "squish" it flat against the frame rail so that it will clear.......at least for a while.

I see, thanks for the replies. I didn't realize the factory outlets wouldn't work with the hose. Are there ducts available that I can attach to the factory outlet or do they all require the wheel well to be removed? What is SCAT hose and where can I find it? I may try to "squish" idea if I can't find any soon, I'm running out of time as usual.

I'm not sure about your car. On my C6 you pull the stock "duct" and then you install the Z06/DRM/Quantum duct. You don't really have to pull the wheel well, just loosen the front fender well liner.

SCAT is aviation grade hose. skygeek.com is one source. Just type in SCAT in the search box for different diameters of SCAT.

Wow, that's a lot of info! Thanks for the links, those are helpful.

There seem to be rubbing problems with most of the ducts - some people have them, some don't. But for the C5 Z the only option is to purchase DRM/LG/ECS ducts and then work out the hose, which has plenty of options. Does the C6 Z come with ducts that will work on a C5 Z? Is there a duct that's the easiest to install or cool better or are they all pretty much the same? I know everyone has an opinion, just curious to hear some. Thanks.

Here is a picture of our duct that should explain the setup a bit better.

See how tight it gets to the chassis. This was built this way for tire and wheel clearance. I can send you the install if you give me your email address.

Thanks, the pictures and explanations do help, I didn't realize there was so little clearance there. I'll PM my email.
