Default Economical GPS Lap Timer

Can someone suggest an inexpensive GPS lap timer. I don't want to spend $1,000 on a Traqmate.

All I want is lap times. I don't need all the bells and whistles. I DO WANT in car display of lap times. I don't want to have to download to a PC to see times.

I see a lot of units for bikes but as near as I can tell they will have antenna problems unless you put them on the windshield.

BTW, I tried iPhone applications but they need 3G coverage. My track is rural and doesn't have 3G coverage....

TIA

Rick

I got a performance box this summer. Only used it once so far, but I really like it.

http://www.vboxusa.com/performancedr...ormancebox.php

So far, I've just run it in the windshield. I will probably get a remote antenna and mount somewhere else this winter.

What is a "pocket PC?"

I read the description but it's in a language I don't understand....

Do you run a cable from the device to whatever a pocket PC is?

Does the pocket PC come with it?

Is an iPhone a pocket PC?

I appreciate the response but am ignorant on what exactly the product is....

Same comment as above. Do you mount this on the outside roof of the car with their magnetic mount?

Do you run a cable to this pocket PC thing?

Is the roof on a C6 Z06 metal?

The driftboxes are great tools for the money. You can use them to do laptimes. It will also do 1/4 mile times, 0-60, 0-100, 60-130. GPS speed. You can set it to record a lot of different things. It will not do what a traqmate does but it is only $499.00.

I'm guessing you mean the "Performancebox" and not the "Driftbox?"

The Driftbox is $750 and appears to be for "drifters".

Are these as accurate as a Traqmate?

Seems to be just what I'm looking for!

It's an option.

Although technically yes, I don't think the creator of MaxQ supports the iphone. Originally the device wasn't up to the task, but who knows now with 3G, 3Gs.

Rick
No cable necessary if you use a supported device it will trasmit the data using bluetooth wireless.

No the roof is not metal, but you can probably mount the unit on the top of the dash. Give one of the resellers a call or check the forums to find out where non-ferrous owners are mounting them.

The have 2 or 3 different ones. The one for $750 measures yaw and slipe. Didn't think you need that. I ran a "performance box" (the $499.00 version) in my car along side a traqmate to do a comparison. The laptimes were almost identical. So I would say it is as accurate - yes.

This is not a GPS, but quite a few drivers use this. I plan on installing the Hot Lap over thie winter.

Here's one I found but no nothing about how well it works or would work in a car versus a bike:

They're for sale on ebay for under $300 shipped.....

http://www.xtracing.com/en/index.php -- their Ultra Lap (beacon) timer has a good reputation, I don't know of anybody using their GPS timer yet.

In general, though, economical == beacon.

My GPS antenna has worked satisfactorily in the cabin both when
velcro-mounted to the dash and when magnetically attached to
the camera mount of a harness bar positioned behind the seats
and under the halo.

I finally made my own and it remembers 10 different track setups, does lap and split times and data recall of all the times for display later. I felt that the data loggers offered just too much data for my needs.

Stores 10 individual tracks, 11 sessions of 35 laps per session/track, computes and displays running average segment times .... I've been using it for 2 full seasons and several of the regulars have them now. A few left still.

I did it for fun ... not to make money unless you consider $1/hr. for the time it took
big bucks!
