If you are new to driving on road courses then the place to start is either in Autocross (a great and inexpensive way to learn car control) or participating in High Performance Driving Events (HPDEs). HPDEs are usually billed as "driving schools" and are organized and staged by a variety of companies, clubs and associations. Just about every road track in the country has something to offer if you want to get the car on a track. Most HPDEs have run groups (novice, intermediate, advanced) - you start in novice with an instructor sitting shotgun. These are non-competition events and passing is usually limited to straights and only with a point by from the slower car. As you progress and get experience then you can decide if you want to take the next step - time trials. Time trials are competitive but its you against the clock, fast guy wins the trophy. From there you are into wheel-to-wheel. A big step up requiring licensing and a car that conforms to the orgainzation's standards for the class you want to compete in (full roll cage, fire system, class limits on mods, etc).
Finding HPDE events is pretty easy once you get a handle on all the different organizations that stage them. The first thing you need to do is decide how far you are willing to drive and then determine the tracks within that distance. Then each track generally has a list of upcoming events to look at. Or, many events are posted in this section. I don't know what track(s) are closest to you but Virginia International is about 5 hrs from Ivel. They have several events coming up.

Here's a couple of sites I found.
http://www.kyscca.com/new/
http://www.autocross.com/autoc/seclub.shtml
Through there you should at least be able to find someone to point you in the right direction. Also, for some serious racing action, see how far you are from mid-ohio -->MAP

NASA is too expensive for most folks. I would stick with HPDEs. Remember, don't do anything to the car for the first year or two. Just concentrate on learning how to drive it.

The NASA events around here are the same cost as other club events. Different tracks cost more though, like Road America has a much larger fee then Blackhawk farms.
