Tire Question
At what point do you toss your street tires for de days? When they're bald? Is there a point after a number of de days that they just become harder and much less grippy even though they still have decent tread?
I'd like to pick up some R888's but don't see myself having time before Saturday and am just wondering how much can be squeezed out of streets before becoming less safe.

I have less than 2/32 on my rear Supercar EMTs and they are still going strong. I have two more track days left this year so they will definitely make it through the rest of my season.

That depends on how fast you want to go. I won't take my '04 Z06 back to the track on the orginal tires that only have 13k miles. The rubber is hard and doesn't grip much, and my A6's grip like a cat on carpet.

Yep, my OEM runflats got hard as nails. Fun, but slow! I applaud you for learning on street rubber. I've lost count of the folks I've coached who, after their first day, decide they're ready for a big brake kit, R compounds, and more horsepower!
BWT, I think the R888s are a very good street/track compromise. That's what I ran until my tire trailer came along.

I have been running a set of Kumho Ecsta MX's on my 87 for a couple years now and while there is still decent tread ( about 4/32) on them, I have noticed that they take a little longer to build up grip and they are a little less predictable when I push them hard. Somebody mentioned that the MX compounds that make then a sticky tire are only in the upper layers of the tread.
But they still work, they just don't feel the same as they did originally.

Thanks all. I'll just have to take it slower this weekend, but there appears to be about 2 days left on this set of streets.
Not at all surprised that cords and sparks are the judging factor of when it's tire replacement time.
