Default When to throw away Toyo R888's

This is most likely a debatable question, but from your personal experience, when is it advisable to toss a set of R888's when being used for road-racing?

A little history: I picked up a set of lightly used 305 scrubs and used them for 1 weekend event at CMP and 2 (or maybe it was 3) single day events at VIR thus far. They seem to still be hooking up. The tread is almost completely gone. Visually there is just a faint indication of where the tread was.

Before throwing myself back on the track Saturday I wanted to see if these needed to be tossed. Believe it or not, someone actually told me to run it till you can see the cords. I’m no rocket scientist, but that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I ran mine until the tread was gone but they went away really fast after that and you will definitely know when they do.

I doubt you could run them to cording if you wanted to get around T-1 at VIR without the car pushing so bad you will have to kill all the speed.

You've got plenty of life left. RA-1/R-888s are pretty consistent right down until they almost cord. My experience has been that when the grip does start dropping off, it drops off quickly. You'll feel it before you get into any significant cording.

So, I'd say head off to your next event!

Have a good one,
Mike

when I used 888 they heat cycled out before the rubber was gone. Heavy understeer forced me to throw them out, the car could not turn at speed. it also came on very suddenly, I thought the car was broken.

888's ? Right as they leave the Yok factory door.

I don't like the 888s. Had my first set this year. Ran them till one corded pretty badly.

I hope the RA1s make it back into the mainstream.

I have a set of Hoosier Koni takeoffs that I'm trying for the first time this weekend.

The R888s demand an entirely different car set up and tire pressure than the RA-1s did. If you're using your old stuff you certainly won't be happy.

Wouldn't want to go quite that far, but we're all guilty of pushing the limits here and there. You would benefit from an alignment change.

Going to the first sign of cords is OK, it's an easy way to check for the right alignment.

I seem to recall such occurences.

R888s - run em to the cord. They will slide quite a bit before then - really helps my CMC car rotate....
