Default Storing tires

I bought Hoosier A6s towards the end of this season. They have 2/3 tread left, so I want them good for next season.

They will spend the winter in the heated garage. Should I put them in garbage bags, knit tire cozies, etc. so they keep their stick?

How many heat cycles ?

tread depth has nothing to do with grip

I talked to Hoosier at Daytona last week about this. They said just store them in a dry place at room temp. And keep then out of the sun. JD

On the other hand, if you really want to knit some tire cozies, I think you should. They won't help at all, but they won't do any harm either. It would make Martha Stewart so happy if you did.

I don't like Martha Stewart. So I guess all my questions are answered.

Thanks.

I have read it's also a good idea to keep tires away from electric motors. Some gasses (ozone) generated by the motor may be harmful to the rubber or the compounds. Not sure if that's completely true but it seems plausible.

I keep my Hoosier A6's at the opposite end of my garage from the furnace and freezer just in case. I don't cover them.

I was told to put them in big plastic bags ( garbage bags ) & keep in a cool dry place. So I keep mine in an air cond. office at work that we don't use. Right or wrong that is what I am doing for now.

Ozone is the primary cause of tire wear on street cars (when driven normally on the street). Ozone causes micro cracks in the tires and then driving causes small pieces to brake off. This is called "evironmental stress cracking". It's a different wear mode than metal bearings or other things like that which wear away small amounts of material evenly.

Putting your tires in a bag helps protect them from Ozone. Ozone is commonly created by electric arcs such as lightning, electric motors, etc.

Check with tire stores like Les Schwab or Discount Tire to see if they will give you some of their large plastic tire storage bags. Or use some 45 gallon trash bags.

What's the minimum temp to keep them stored at? My unheated garage rarely gets below 45* and my wife will not allow me to keep them in the kitchen - go figure

Go to Uhaul. They sell plastic wrap in rolls that come in sizes big enough for even the rear tires. Looks like a roll of glad wrap on steroids. You can wrap the tire surface cheap... roll costs $14 and will last forever. Just pull as you wrap and it stretches and grabs to itself. I feel bettter that the Hoosiers are covered... not sure how much diffenence it makes.

I'm starting to re-think this whole 'believe anything Mark says' philosophy.

they say that, and then they'll gladly throw them on a UPS truck from Lakeville in Dec headed your way

there were a lot of frost covered ones at RA last weekend

I was always told to keep R comps above 32.

I store mine under plastic in the basement (~70, 35-40% humidity in the winter) in the dark corner. Now if I could only get the stupid things to mate and multiply while they have their privacy...

Keep them Warm and dry, the warmer the better..last year my Hoosiers felt like hockey pucks when I kept them in the garage Around (35f-40f). This year I moved all 16 tires into the basement where its a steady 75f you can feel the rubber is still soft with yout fingernail.

If any of you'd like, just ship them to me in Florida and I'll keep them warm for you. I'll just make a few runs on them so they don't get bored. It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Ed

The last several days have been pretty darn cold and so far the unground basement hasn't seen temps below 55*. I let the air out of the tars and managed to shove them inside heavy duty 45gal black trash bags. Should be good to go.
