pickup bed - open, covered or cap? tools?
For those towing your car to the track
Do you leave the bed open?
Cover it up?
Put a cap on it?
Where do you keep you tools
Boxes in the bed?
Toolbox mounted in the bed.
Inside the cab?
(Hey, 10 years on the forum and this is my 1st poll )

Pretty much all of the spares, tires, tools, etc are stowed on the trailer. I have a tent that uses the bed of the truck for my accommodations so a cap would not work. If I did not have the tent, then I would have a cap.

I put everything in my trailer.
I've been wanting to get a retracting tonneau cover that is lockable. That way I can roll it up when hauling larger items.
I've never been a big fan of caps. What do you do when you have to move large objects? Take the cap off and store it?
For now the bed is open. I haul my fuel bottles in the bed most of the time.

Since I don't own an enclosed trailer, I think a cap is the only way to go.

Use a cap with full length windows that open for access to the shelf. Added a shelf that I can roll out if I need the space for something other than racing. Shelf is at the height of the top of the bed. Will post a picture tomorrow.
Ed
Edited to add pictures. Shelf significantly increases capacity and accessibility. Shelf has garage door rollers mounted under it with garage door tracks mounted on inside of bed. Shelf can be emptied and easily removed to create space for other uses. Shelf has one sloped side for easy visibility of contents. Other side is flat for larger items.

I would put a cap even though I don't have on on mine because of work. If you have to pop it off it's fairly easy now with the clamps unlike many many years ago
If I use the Excusion it's like a truck with a cap. I have three boxes mounted on the trailer.

I have a tonnue cover on my truck but i had a toolbox built for the front of my trailer thats about 2ft deep and with shelf in the middle of it so it's just not a pile of stuff in there. Here are some pics below of it. and well no current pics but i have since added a tire rack above the tool box
you can see the box and tire rack in the background of this pic on the RV

I used a roll up cover for a while. Warranty replaced it twice and it still leaked where it rolled up into the box. Not much but enough to get everything wet.
Now I have flip up tonneau from Undercover. Pops off with two clips when I haul something big. It's lightweight and when it's off I just lean it against a wall in the garage.

My truck has an 8ft bed and is covered with a pretty high cap. Lots of stuff in there, it all stays dry, secure and ther is a lot of head room. I've even taken my bar-b-que gril to the track with it.

I tow with a Yukon so I don't have this specific problem. However, if I had a pickup AND I could specifically modify it to be a tow rig first and a common pickup second, I'd get a fiberglass flat top with a roll out bed tray similar to those made by www.cargobed.com. I'm not promoting their specific product, but I love that it is sturdy, heavy duty and I can easily access all my materials.
(now I'm secretly wishing I didn't have the Yukon or could afford another vehicle!)
Peace

We have a Ford 250 Super Duty crew cab diesel with a cap. We also sprayed the bed with Line-X and them put in a piece of plywood to make it easier to keep the bed looking nice. We carry a spare transmission, differential and some of our spare tires. We also carry two trailer tires in the back of the truck and some of our luggage. The rest of the luggage goes into the back of the crew cab. We have a trailer with over and under cabinets for spares. The trailer has two belly boxes for things like a radiator, jack, jack stands, wood to drive up on, rubber boots for bad weather and some other small stuff that we dont need very often. Next trailer will have 3 belly boxes. We also have two cargo bars on E track in the rear of the trailer for 8 more tires including a set of mounted rains. In all we carry 4 sets of mounted tires for a race weekend. The trailer holds the car and a golf cart so things are pretty much full. It works for us.
