Viper spin at Lime Rock
Saturday I ran with SCDA at Lime Rock and temps were about 50. And as usual one of the drivers didn’t wait to get the tires up to temp and this is what happened to a Viper.

Yes it was a bad hit it looked like all body panels were damaged. I was showered with viper pieces luckily it did fly back on the track.
I didn’t have a very good day either. On the third run I think I bent a push rod. It is making a real racket

Viper probably didn't have the wheels straight coming over the hill. You can get some air on that hill! Looks like an exspensive hit! Good flagger is very important there. One person died last year.

Looks like he did get some air. If you view the vidoe in full-screen, you can just see some daylight under the rear wheels as he goes over the crest of the hill.

I agree very good flagger! he had the yellow out before the car was off the track. I think they have been doing it so long they can tell when some one is off line or getting on the gas to soon. I don't think he caught air his marks started before the crest of the hill. He just hit the throttle to much on cold tires before he was straight. Luckily he was ok.

Viper parts are REAL exspensive! Hood like 6,000 used or 13,000 new dealer cost 10,000
If he didn't get air he had 2 pounds of weight on ea tire
I get air there all the time and have to let off the throttle like when I raced boats.

looked like a ACR viper, rear wheels look like they became airborn and if the front wheels were slightly turned and the cars rear wing would or could steer the car into the wall. thats my CSI investigation. either way, a expensive oops.

Lan Jet I heard the rod knock coming from your car when you came off the track. Hopefully that doesnt set you back too much. The only bright side is that it happened in November and for us in the Northeast its the end of the season. Good Luck

Like Shiels mentioned, all four wheels may not have been straight coming over the top. Also, when going over a crest like that, you have to modulate the throttle as you can lock up your diff when the weight of the car comes back down on the rear wheels giving it instant grip. We've had this happen a few times to the higher HP cars at Autobahn when 'the jump' is in play running full track. This may have been the case here, as the rear came down the rear wheels tried to plant but couldn't due to cold tires temps. Hard to say just by watching and hopefully no damage to the driver other than ego.

I have had that happen on iRacing numerous times with similar results - shoot to the right and into the barrier. Except I can just hit ESC and get a new car.
If wheels aren't straight and car isn't pretty straight at the top of the hill you can get into trouble.

The 'driver" had been running with Lime Rock's "Club" in the AM; SCDA in the PM. So it wasn't that he had no prior laps at LRP.
He brought 3 cars:
1. A Panoz race car - judged over the 89 DB limit
2. An Indy Lights car - probably the same issue, and,
3. The ACR Viper which bought the farm.
'Twas the 2nd lap, minimal heat in the tires. Apparently, he hammered the gas exiting the hill which precipitated the classic clockwise spin and encounter with the tire wall.
The flaggers were excellent. The yellow warning lights at the start of the uphill were already blinking and the flagger at the top of the hill was already holding simultaneous yellow/black flags.
Glad only the car was hurt. Ego - more's the shame - may not have been.
As someone observed, "apparently he ran out of track and talent at the same time."
Very expensive lesson.
