Years back we changed a 92 LT1 from the 2pc rubber mount unit to a centerforce DF clutch and their 1pc steel flywheel, it was a pretty easy swap as corvette work goes, held up to a 150 shot at the track too. -Dan

What he said. The aluminum flywheel is definitely a great upgrade, the engine revs much quicker with it. If you're in there don't waste your time with a steel flywheel. I also have the Centerforce clutch, which is pretty noisy for a clutch but it's held up well to lots of track time. Well worth it for the price compared to some others out there - and at least I know what this noise is!

Put a "*" with the aluminum flywheels though (I run them myself, love them), but if someone is a drag racer the steel wheels allow the car to hit the tires and 60ft harder due to the stored inertia . The lighter flywheel does allow the motor to rev faster and what I like is that it sheds rpm faster on shifts, as you go to the next gear it doesn't stay at the high rpm. -Dan

For roadracing or auto-x you want the lighter aluminum flywheel as launches are not as important as in drag racing. If you are drag racing the steel would be the better choice, but since you mentioned auto-x I would go with the aluminum.
