I guess the FIA told them they could only do it at Barber or else they would have to head to Europe.

I'm willing to bet that your ideas of a "quick time" at Barber will be badly shaken. In 1984 I ran a support race for the Dallas GP around the Fairgrounds and Cotton Bowl. On the same day and circumstances that I ran a qualifying time of 2 minutes 30 seconds, the F1 cars ran a time of 1 minute 30 seconds!!!

The indy cars ran at barber, it will be interesting to see how the times compare.
Fast lap was 1:09 average speed 119 mph...a good lap in a vette is around 1:45 with TOP speed of 115. I'll bet the F1 car will hit 180 mph. I wonder what the fastest part of the track will be, maybe the back section (kink etc.?)

probably why the FIA said Barber was OK. It will be neat to see how they run there. Faster then Indy cars is my bet.

I think the only time Indy car (and it was CART) ran on the same track as F1 was at Montreal in the early 2000s. It's been several years. IIRC, the fastest F1 time was 7 secs quicker than the fastest CART time (I'd have to look it up).
*edit* found it - 5 secs
The head to head comparison came thanks to the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. Both series race there and have to qualify on the exact same track.
Sebastien Bourdais won pole position for the Indy event held this past weekend with a time of 1:20.396.
Jenson Button who won the pole for the F1 event held earlier in the year, set a time of 1:15.217.

I always wondered how they would compare. Looks like the formula car would gain a lap every 15-16 times around.

Helio Castroneves turned a faster lap time the first time they tested at Barbers at a 1:06.

2007 - Montreal - Champ Car
Bourdais pole position = 1:20.005
2007 - Montreal - F1
Hamilton pole position = 1:15.486 (this was in qualifying session #2)
Difference = 4.519 seconds
Things to note when comparing them:
The F1 car (at the time) had to weigh at least 1335 pounds INCLUDING THE DRIVER. The Champ Car had to weigh 1575 pounds WITHOUT the driver. Add in the weight of an "average" Champ Car driver (maybe 135 pounds?) and the Champ car approaches being 400 pounds heavier (!) I wonder what lap time the F1 car would have set with an additional 400 pounds added to it
Champ car required steel brakes (cost containment) while F1 used state-of-the-art carbon brakes.
Given just those two elements alone, I'd say that ONLY a 4.5 second difference is pretty friggin' good!
Add in the differences in the tire technologies between the series...
And anyone who's watched the F1 cars at Montreal can tell you what an impressive thing it is!
