Default lap timer

Any recommendations for a good, easy to use GPS lap timer?

Thanks

I use a traqmate and I think that it works great and is very easy to use. Here is some video with the data.

With the Traqmate system you get great data about your track sessions, but you only get the synched video if you have video camera and the TraqStudio software that integrates your data and video.

If you don't have video, you'll open up TraqView on your computer and get info like you see below:

If you have a video camera you can get TraqStudio software and see synchronized video next to all the data:

With TraqStudio you can select a few laps and have the software write video files that you can upload to youtube, streetfire, vimeo, etc. TraqStudio can use the Traqmate data to put a "dashboard" onto your video. Try the links below to see the dashboard on the video:

There are some other really great data-loggers that hook into your OBD port to pick up info from sensors in the car. With Traqmate you need to tap into wires to OE sensors (tach signal, throttle position, brake light wire, brake pressure sensor, oil pressure, etc.) or add sensors and then run the wires to your Traqmate unit.

On the traqview dash board, does it list all of the lap times or do you have to decipher them from the graph?

Thanks

If you can see those still-frame pictures of the youtube videos in my post above, I've got the Traqmate DU (Display Unit) mounted in the cup holder just in front of the gear shift. The DU has about a foot-long cable coming out of it that you hook into a longer cable that goes to your SU (Sensor Unit) that you can mount elsewhere in the car (passenger floor, center console, or in the cargo compartment like I have mine).

After a session you can get a bunch of data from the DU by scrolling around, and I think you can view lap times - but it's just a very small window on the unit.

Or, if you take a laptop to the track, you can plug your DU into a USB port on your laptop and open up the session to really get all the data that you want to see to really analyze your session. Below is a screenshot of TraqView on my computer, and I've opened the "Setup" window to select all the parameters I want displayed when I close that window. You can see that all the lap times are displayed with the fastest lap highlighted in green.

Take a look at RLC racing's website regarding the Track Commander, Micro pod sport and Micro pod lite models and compare them to the traqmate. I purchased the Micro pod sport. I haven't used it yet but I think it offers a few options other systems don't.

If you mount the Display Unit in a safe viewable place you can acutally view your laptimes at a quick glance. Just after you pass the finish line the lap time is held on the screen. After 30 seconds or so the screen changes back to realtime tracking and will display a + or - sign indicating how many 10ths of a second ahead or behind your are compared to your best lap.

Default iPhone apps

I went out to dinner with my wife tonight, then when she went shopping I was checking email and surfing around on my iPhone.

I remembered seeing some apps a month or so ago that do some data logging. I did an app search tonight and came up with a few, and this one might be the best of the lot:

http://forum.iphoneworld.ca/iphone-a...app-21615.html

If you have an iPhone, do an app search for "lap timer", "data acquisition", "track days", etc. and you might find a few more. I see that one in the link above is $11.99, and a couple others that might not be as capable are either free or very cheap.

Does anybody have any experience with these iPhone aps???

Bob

RE iPhone, I have Harry's lap timer, and while I really like it, the only time I had a comparison (NASA TT Time Trial) the results were waaayyy off. I'm hoping to mount it better this year and see if I can get better data, but so far it's been a disappointment.

Do your times seem to be accurate? Also, at a new track how long does the unit take to learn the track?

Thanks

Times are very accurate, as checked by my vids, FWIW. It's a GPS based system so it's much more accurate than 'accelerometer-based' units.

It takes one lap. You push a button on the start/finish line, and it gives you the time when you cross it again.

Tutorial page for the PBox...lessons on the bottom of the screen- should give you an good idea if it would work for your needs.

I think I am going to go for one of these. Those of you who bought them, did you by them direct, if not where?
Also how was the shipping, cost and quickness ?

Thanks

I am not exactly sure what it was but a guy at one of my events had a unit that basically looked like a stop watch for about $300.00

He just put it in his center console and then was able to download all the data, inlcluding track map to his laptop.

Somebody else on here might have some info on it.
