Default Got some free pads!!

I have been handed a set of Hawk pads for my "emerging" HPDE car.

HB247Z-575 [Ceramic] fronts
HB112F-540 [rear]

This will be the fist set on fresh stock rotors and we are day #1 in the driving thing, so we will have a nanny for a bit?

Free is good! But..here is the question: Are these something I should

A... Put on now?

B... Put on after eating a few stock sets?

C... Give away [ no sand bag answers, now?].

D... trade them in?

Actually, I have the receipt about $170 worth

Noted and filed for future reference.

A Forum member has a set of Hawk DTC 70 compound. Seems a more appropriate choice.

But that brings me to the next question. Why not stock pads for the first sessions? I mean we have never done this..... [ Drag racing people, I know more trailer trash] .... and I assume we are going to be low speed but beating the brakes up pretty good acclimatizing ourselves to the "Pucker Factor"???

Sort of like not putting fancy slicks on the car at the beginning of the process ?????

Anyone out there that can advise???

Beginners tend to overbrake, fast in straights and then way overbrake for corners thus wearing out pads quickly. You will probably find you have to do a pad change at the track.

When I first started I had a tendency to "drag" the brake while learning the track. This heated them up real fast.

I think the HP Blue would work well:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HW...TE&prefilter=1

but it is still pretty expensive, I have used them many times before. You have to swap them out for a track event, when they are cold(street driving) they will eat rotors, they are fine to drive to and from the track though.

you are running C4 J55's correct?

Actually the stock C5 ZO6 pads are pretty good. I started on stock pads. But as others have stated, you must use brake maintenance

Their maximum operating temperature is too low, they will overheat and lose friction.

Upgraded to C5 on the front. Can't swear to the rear. Different rear ['94] but 13" rotors?

That's the answer I am searching for. I have bought the Hawk DTC70 from a forum member, but day #1 with the Instructor really doing the driving, I think I will have the stock ZO6 pads. Now to check the price on those puppies?

If we eat them up them I will go to the HAWK.

But that sounds like a rational starting point.

Thanks!!!

That will happen with Randall. He has 500Hp motor [ at 7500RPM] ready to go in!

I mean come on. All we are going to do is get heart failure when we try to stop it.

He is the "motor" 1/2 of this madness. I get the rest [ as in brakes & suspension] .

The stock Z06 pads were a waste of money for me. YMMV! I totally wore them out in one event and had to go easy on the brakes because they would overheat and not brake well. I was not happy. Same for HPS. Those are fine for rear pads.

i Ran ceramincs at Pocono North HPDE. It was when i was first becoming an intermediate from a beginner. By the end of a 2 day session, I almost went right through the bust stop at turn 1, the glazed from teh heat and wouldnt slow the car.

Great cheap pads for a newbie, but not for long after that. You can NOT break deep at all with those once they are hot. If this is your first season, never done it.. go for it. They wont last long anyhow :-) Read here:

If you havent yet on the dos and donts of building your first HPDE car.
