Default Removing rotor brackets?

I've spent at least 4 hours today trying to remove the rotor brackets on the stock C5Z brakes and have had no luck in doing so. Everything was fine until I got to the bolts holding the brackets around the rotor. I read on David Farmer's site that those bolts should be torqued to 175 ft/lbs so I took my handy torque wrench and tried to loosen them... wouldn't budge.

I set the wrench to 250 ft/lbs and still wouldn't budge. Then I finally got one loose on the left rear by using the car jack to move the wrench handle in the direction to loosen it up. But there's no way it should be that hard of a job right? Am I doing something wrong here?

If anyone has a good suggestion on how to get them loose alot easier... I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

give them a few smacks on the bolt head with a hammer to loosen them up (they get corrosion in there and junk).

Eat your wheaties in the morning and rip on them.

Rust buster overnight & biggest breaker bar you can get your hands on.

I put my foot against the breaker bar.

Or good 1/2 dr air gun.

Do not use a torque wrench to remove the bolts. Use it when you install the bolts. Impact wrench always works for me but a breaker bar with pipe extention for removal always works. CCW off

You think it shouldnt be that hard right?? Wrong - it is..hehe. As others have mentioned, I use a breaker bar and get in the most uncomfortable position possible to get as much leverage as I can and wrench on that bolt.

I used a 5 foot long steel pipe as a breaker bar on mine... worked like a champ.

in most cases, it is just extremely difficult to get any leverage with the car on the ground, or on jack stands/jack. If you can get it high enough to get some leverage, a long breaker bar or a jack handle OVER a breaker bar can work wonders.

btw, it's 125ft-lbs, or 175 N-M. 175ft-lbs could really do some damage!

Yep, the biggest issue I had was I was at the track and could not get the car very high. It's tough but they eventually give up.

Use the impact wrench as stated above and they will come right off. Make sure you use impact sockets.

On corroded fasteners I've found that sometimes it helps to turn the bolt clockwise (right hand thread) to tighten it a little and then continue with loosening. There may be locktite in there and in that case heat works to break the bond.

Heat that bolt up! And a 1/2 impact with some *****. Then throw the bolt in the trash after you get it out.

I to have had to use the weight of the car with the jack etc. to break them loose.
I change the rotors so often now that they come right off but that first time was a real bitch and curse words could be heard

OK, now think of thee poor guys who need to swap brake pads between track and street using the new "nice" C6 Z06 calipers

Same story every time since the calipers have to come off to swap brake pads One reason to if I ever get a new C6 Z06 the stock calipers will be replaced first ! (Friend of mine had a great time before every track day until He swapped the calipers out, a bit more easier now !)

If I read correctly... after these bolts come out, they need to be trashed and not used again? I guess I better carry a good supply of these with me at the track.

you don't normally replace them, but if they are siezed to the point that you have to heat/cut/impact or other extreme measure, then they may need replacement. I've never replaced on myself.
