Default SKF Race Hubs, holy carpe are they tight

I doubt that I got two bad ones...just want some confirmation that it is normal for new ones to be very tight. They are tight to the point that they feel like they are binding a little when spun in hand slowly. Occasionally there is a point where they need just a touch of torque to break free of a bind. I don't want to overstate things, it is not like they lock up, but damn they are tight.

Does this sound familiar?

are they mounted with a wheel, or are you literally spinning them in your hand? If the latter, I expect they would seem very tight

Just in my hand, messing with my head, prior to install.

Compared to stock GM or Timken hubs, the SKF will seem very tight. They are machined and assembled to much better tolerances.

I've discussed this with one of the engineers from SKF. They use a type of grease that has a crystaline structure at room temperature. That crystal component causes the bearing to feel very tight and have catches when turned by hand. Once up to speed, the crystals melt into the grease with some heat.

What you're feeling is totally normal. I suggested that SKF put a notice in the package describing this, to eliminate concern by those installing these hubs. I think they have received many calls about it.

This forum is awesome. I was talking to a buddy that works on NASCAR stuff, and he also mentioned that the grease could be what I am feeling.

Thanks for the info. And, I agree, a note in the box would have been nice.
