CV boot replacement ?s
Spent yesterday replacing an outer CV boot on my C5Z. Got everything back together up to tightening the clamps.
The FSM says that the big clamp uses the same pliers as the small one, but they are completely different clamps. The small clamp pliers are really expensive (for what they are $77. Looks like I might be able to use horse shoe nail pliers to crimp it). Not sure what is needed for the big clamp.
Anyone have hints on what to use to install the clamps (especially the big one)?

I know when I did my wife's subaru it was cheaper (from a pain in the *** standpoint) to just buy a new set of axles. It wasn't much more than the parts for the boot replacement, and well worth the time.
I think I saw someone advertising new (or remaned) axles here the other day for a pretty reasonable price.

mine needed replacing and the shop owner had the pliers, needed both of us to stretch that PITA clamp and it just snapped in.
Both of us spoke at the same time, why wouldn't a band clamp work instead?

In case anyone decides to go ahead and rebuild their axles themselves after ready everyone's feedback (I already had $80 invested in the boot kit, so figured I by as well march on), the pliers to install the clamps are:
Lisle 30800 (for the inner clamp)
Lisle 30500 (for the outer clamp)
I found various substitutes for the 30800, but the 30500 for the outer was harder to come by. Found out the CarQuest repackages Lisle tools under their brand, so you can use the same part numbers from them. They had to order to 30500 from the warehouse, but had it for me in 4 hrs.
BTW, I used a clamp on the pliers to get enough force to tighten the clamps.

most auto parts stores sell a pack of 2 boot clamps, one larger and one smaller, that you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to install. I've gone this route a couple times on various cars and haven't had issues. Seems like a good (cheaper) alternative to the prices listed above.
