Default Trailer for my C5, question on specs....

I'm looking for a trailer for towing my C5. I'm new to trailer towing so I need a little help understanding the specs given by a particular manufacturer (Pace). For the one I'm looking at the trailer curb weight is 3452#, payload is 6548#, (it has 5k axles). But then it says "Hitch Weight" 345#, that's 10% of the empty weight.

I don't get the hitch weight, seems low! I thought the general idea was 10% of the trailers gross weight should be my tongue weight. So if this trailer can gross 10K, then shouldn't the hitch weight be something like 1,000 lbs?

I noticed that all of the Pace trailers seem to follow this same standard, hitch weight given as 10% of curb weight. So if I understand what Pace is saying, I should only load the hitch ( is that the same as tongue???) to 345 lbs no matter how much cargo weight I'm loaded with?

you= overthinking things.

hitch weight is 10% of trailer weight, as stated above (345lbs hitch, 3452lbs empty weight).

I would expect that your hitch weight varies with load to the tune of 10% total weight.

What are you worried about anyway? Is your tow vehicle an s-10?

Don't be silly, he's from Idaho. They use 1 ton duellies for grocery carts.

The Pace is good trailer, go for it.

Hitch weight will change once you load the trailer with track stuff and the car. Don't read too much into the published hitch weights. My 10k weight rated 28' Pace with cabinets and fully finished interior has a 1200 lb EMPTY hitch weight so assume the published weights are sans ANYthing interior finishing wise. The hitch weight was measured with a Sherline scale.

The empty trailer weight with nothing but cabinets and fully finished interior is over 6200 lbs... shorter trailers will be lighter so that's not a bad thing if your making a purchase decision now.

The less options in the trailer, the better the carrying capacity. Make sure your tow vehicle can handle the max gross combined weight before buying to save yourself some $$.

get a weight distribution hitch with sway control no matter what you are pulling it with....makes a world of difference....

friend with 1500 ram hemi pulling 24 foot enclosed without couldnt get over 65 without major sway no matter where we seemed to shift the load. pulling my 24 foot with a heavier load using sway and distribution towed at 75 with no issues at all.

The 10% of the total weight is a relative thing. Normally the actual tongue weight of a 24' enclosed trailer is between 500 and 800 LBS. And if you are using a weight distribution hitch, that is distributed to the 4 wheels of you tow vehicle. Keep in mind that what ever you are carrying in the tow vehicle is also considered as tongue weight! JD

Thanks all that helped ((2000BSME = No Help...LOL)))

I am not concerned with overloading my truck, its rated for well of 10K. I just wanted to make sure I did not overload the 'trailer' with its rather odd rating given.

My 24' Pace loaded is around 7500-8k lbs. My tongue weight scales usually at 850lbs.
I use a Reese Straight Pull with dual cam sway controls. It pulls with a F150 without issue and the whole rig is absolutely level.
Tongue weight needs to be at least 10% and to not exceed 15%.
