To me it looked like he couldn't stop the car.

It looked like he was concerned that stopping the car would bring the flames toward the driver.

btw, GRM has a sobering writeup regarding the recent Miata fire at Thunderhill:

I raced last season in the Lotus Cup 260R Middle East Championship. The Lotus is one of the worst car i have driven in terms of reliability.

The front suspension geometry is one of the worst, under braking and front load, it will go from a 2mm toe in to 3mm toe out!!! which cause brake lock.

When i used to take a high g left hand corner, the car actually cuts fuel and then gets it back once I'm straight. The funny thing is, not all cars were affected!

In 5 races, i have changed 4 transmission linkage cables, 1 full transmission, fuel tank, and all the sensors in the engine bay (trying to figure out the power loss after race 3). Really a shame, it cost me the championship after i was leading with a big margin winning race 1 and 2 in a row.

I would never drive a Lotus in my life. I have a family that i need to go back to. I have zero trust in their reliability and safety. Anything can happen with this car, fire, wheel flying off, brake failure, amazing things that you will never imagine.

Not to mention the fact that the chassis is an aluminum tub like an airplane which means any damage to the underside pretty much totals the car.

You are right, we had 4 cars that has been declared as a total loss in the 5 races. 3 of the 4 cars had a minor hit from the front and everyone was surprised when they declared them as a total loss.

Fire ? The GRM story should not surprise anyone here at CF.

Dale Earnhardt Jr at Infineon in 2004
Mr Varsha says in the clip that Mr Earnhardt Jr. exited promptly
and the video now seems to illustrate this but it has been edited
by SpeedTV. The driver was in the car a lonnng time and he
later spoke about someone helping him to exit (although he
actually got out unassisted by mortal hands.)
Earnhardt Jr.: Dad Helped Save Me
By Rebecca Leung
60 Minutes 2004, 09.24

“I don't have an explanation for it other than when I
got into the infield care center, I had my PR man by
the collar, screaming at him to find the guy that pulled
me out of the car,” says Earnhardt Jr. “He was like,
‘Nobody helped you get out.’ And I was like, ‘That's
strange, because I swear somebody had me underneath
my arms and was carrying me out of the car. I mean,
I swear to God.”
What's more, Mr Earnhardt was not wearing the bottom
section of his fireproof underwear nor his balaclava at
Infineon
Fiery crash taught Earnhardt tough lesson
By Dave Rodman
NASCAR.Com 2004.07.24

Earnhardt suffered second-degree burns to the inside of both
thighs, his chin and neck after the General Motors factory backed
Compuware Corvette he was driving burst into flames after it
impacted a concrete wall tail-end first.

Friday at NHIS, Earnhardt said he dressed as he normally does to
drive his NASCAR stock cars, and he did not wear a head sock or
fire resistant "long John" underwear for the practice session.

On account, his injuries were worse than they might have been.
The burns have caused Earnhardt and his Dale Earnhardt Incorporated
team to limit his practice time this weekend, and Chance 2 Motorsports
Busch Series driver Martin Truex Jr. will substitute for him in the
majority of Sunday's race.
Coincidently, Mr Earnhardt Jr had been slated to co-drive with
Boris Said that weekend in '04. In 2009, Mr Said also experienced
an on-track fire.

forget the fire - bailing out of a race car while it was still moving was pretty damn impressive - for a second there it looked like he was about to get run over by his own car.
