Defender safety system
I have heard that there is a new HANS-type safety system called the Defender. Does anyone know anything about it such as description, reliability, dealers, cost, etc.?

See Doug or Chris at East Coast Supercharging (forum vendor), they are a dealer and highly recommend the Defender.
I have one and like it a lot. Its the only neck restraint I've ever used so I don't have a direct comparison to others such as the Hans. Its a well made piece, easy to install, adjust and use. Its comfortable and seems to do its job (hope I never have to test it). You have to have a harness in the car to use it. The price is about the same everywhere from what I've seen.

argonaut,
Thanks for the info. I have emailed ECS to get further info. Most road courses don't bother me, but if there's anything large and immobile nearby, then I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of head restraint device.

I just got one also. It is less pricey than the HANS unit and has adjustments for both forward and lateral tethering. HANS only has forward. I have used it in my Z06, Miata and our Chump car and as long as you have a good 6 point system it will work correctly for you. Like I have always said, It s not speed that kills, its the sudden stop. So if you need to use it get the best safety gear you can get.
In the Chump car the seat was too upright which made it uncomfortable but it set up just fine. Bought mine form the factory, and the vendors out there all charge the same price. It comes with a carrying case and a baseball cap
