Chevy 2500 Duramax or Ford F250 6.4 L Diesel to Haul My Vette?
What do ya'll think about the Chevy 2500 Duramax vs. the Ford F250 6.4L Diesel? I'll be upgrading from my F150 4x4 soon. It has been a dog hauling my Z06 to the track. I test drove both trucks today. The Chevy runs about $3000 more. Is the difference worth it?
These were my observations:
Ford F250 6.4L Diesel Price $39,000
Tighter steering
Quieter diesel engine
Stiffer suspension
Quicker brake response
Very good acceleration
Chevy 2500 Duramax with Allison Transmission Price $42,000
Looser steering
More comfortable seat
Smoother drive
Soft brakes
OK acceleration
The Chevy dealer trashed the Ford 6.4L saying there have been serious problems with thier new motor. I don't know if there is any truth to that or if this was just a sales pitch. What experience do ya'll have with both these trucks?
Thanks

My Duramax is pretty darn quiet. And, quite frankly, I feel all 660 foot pounds of torque when I accelerate with my car in tow. Running enclosed trailer got 10mpg, running with current open trailer get 14.7mpg, running no trailer get 21mpg. All of this on 60K mileage engine at 70mph. Mine is a sierra and the ride is great, no complaints here.

Ford has had some problems and it is a fuel hog most new trucks are.. New Ford motor coming out soon so I would wait if you want a Ford. More power better mileage supposedly.

I have heard it said more than once that the perfect combination would be the cummings engine and the allison transmission. Of course, now that GM sold off allison last year, that combination is possible??

Diesels like LSx engines can be tuned for better fuel millage and response. and still stay in warrenty.
the 2010 Fords are a bit down on highway millage. Ford truck dealer mentioned a new 2011 ford engine ( built by ford IIRC not an International ) with a 6 speed auto for better fuel millage

No way a Ford diesel is quieter than a Duramax. No way.
LBZ is the motor to have IMO. 650lb ft, solid 18mpg plus if you keep your foot out of it (I see 17.5-19.5 mixed 60/40 city to hwy hand calc'd every tank) I DD an 06 2500 dura/alli crew cab. Bone stock, even paper air filter still.
LBZ is pre-DPF, better gas mileage, seems to be the fewest problems based on the forums like dieselplace. More power than same year Ford's, quieter, more gas mileage. It was available in mid 05 through the 07 "classic" model trucks.
Cummins motors seem to be the most mod friendly, but also start with the least power from the get go, and they are also the loudest.
Ford makes a nice truck, but if you want mileage, power, and something not really loud, the Duramax is the way to go.
I get 13-16 towing an open steel trailer with my 01z and 350lbs of gear at 70mph. Generally don't even have to downshift on large grades, just torques up the hill without much effort.
G'luck

Ford outperformed the GMC and Chevy in my comparison and have never had a Ford product before--it was quiet, comfortable seats, taller, and better interior finish and was not outpulled in mountains and I was pulling more weight. Mileage is 9-10mpg pulling 10k lbs--not so good. It is a personal pref, would not trade to GM at this time. As you can see, opinions are like a--holes--everyone has one and they are different

Guess that settles it! I would drive all three and sit in them for 30 minutes and sit in them at night also to see the interior lights and HVAC systems. They are all going to get the job done and it won't matter if one has 30 hp more or less.
They are all fairly good now at catching mods and telling you to stick it so I would not plan on that with a new truck.

The new ford 11' 6.7L diesel is getting 13-17mpg in town and 19-23mpg highway. The new 6 speed automatic is so smooth. Pretty sure the 11' duramax is supposed to have same hp/tq numbers as the 6.7L ford and get around the same mpg's.

I've had both and currently in a 6.4 Ford
Both great trucks, got bored with the Chevy's and switched to a Harley edition F350
Rides like a truck, pulls like a truck, uses fuel like an air craft carrier (they all do now because of the emissions).
The Ford is just a lot nicer package to me over all, trim, comfort, look. Now if GMC comes out with a Denali HD I would look at it. I do miss the steering in the 1/2 tons I had but the new diesels pull so well I don't think I will go back to a gas motor.
The Chevys are great trucks just no character. Really they are on par, it's all about what you want.
Good Luck

I'll give you the Ford has the nicer interior to some's taste. However, I have spent many nights pulling the car trailer home and only used one hand on the wheel as the Sierra rides like a big comfy limousine. ( OK, maybe slight exaggeration but not by much). I always arrive home rested and no road weariness from the long haul. I ain't as young as I used to be and that is important, COMFORT.
