Default R Compound tires?? for new extra set of wheels

Well I got a great deal on a 2nd set of wheels for my 05' C6 Z51. I have taken it to two HPDEs and really enjoyed them. Eventually with a bonus or that extra paycheck or two us bi-weekly people get a year I would like to put some tires on there that are more race oriented that I could drive to the track.

I haven't done that many events so I don't want to go to Hoosiers or anything but R-Compound i hear is a good step in the direction of traction.

They are stock 05 C6 wheels, but i hear you can +size tires to about 20mm and be safe.

Pretty much looking for a good recommendation of what some good tires would be to run at the track on these wheels.

Thanks.

Stock tires are the GY so ill use those for a size reference. 25.7" diam in the front and 26.9 diam in the rear. I have read for the active handling to keep the tires the same percentage apart so the system isn't going to freak out.

For example I saw the Nitto NT05's almost come in the right sizes.

They have 275/35 R19s that are 26.65" and the front would be 245/40/18 that are 25.59". I realize i would be going a bit slow than the spedo says but this looks like a pretty nice R-compound tire to make the next step up in HPDEs.

Are there any R-compound tires in the regular stock tire sizes?

lol, what's wrong with Hoosiers? I've never been on track with street tires. I spent enough time driving on the street with street tires, I'm fully aware of their handling characteristics. I wanted Hoosiers from day one on the track, and that's what I've run.

Nothing is wrong with hooisers, but Right now just have the stock Z51 brake calipers and HP+ pads. I think the slicks would stress my overall set-up a bit more than necessary right now as what i am really looking for is seat time to learn the car and progress into stickier tires and better set-ups over time.

From the R888 what size would you run on stock C6 wheels?

Could you run these on stock C6 Wheels.
Toyo R888
Rears:
295/30ZR19 26" diamater
255/35ZR18 25.1" Diamater

Stock GYs are 25.7" Fronts 26.9" Rears.

These would keep a relatively close proportion between the fronts and rears. The sidewalls would be thinner but these say they have stiff sidewalls. Would something like this set up work on these wheels (stock C6 5 spoke wheels 8.5" and 10" width)

Or the Yokohama Advan NEOVA AD08
255/35R18
295/30R19

Similar sizes as the Toyos listed above for diameter. I know the tire itself is smaller than stock, but so i won't show I am going as fast as before, but thats not the point its traction and grip not your speedometer.

Anyone want to comment and help me out.

Thanks.

Both of the above combinations would work. I'm not familiar with the AD08; Is it an R-compound?

Actually, a smaller rear tire will fool your speedo into thinking it's going faster than it really is.

I saw the NT-05 has a 19" size for the rears but its a 275/35 19 (R) 245/40 18 (F) which actually had the similar diamaters going just a thinner tire this time.

Click "Sizes and Specs". The 255/35r18 + 295/30r19 combo looks like it would work on the 18x8.5 and 19x10 wheels. They're about half inch shorter than stock but they keep the diameter difference the computer likes if you want the electronic nannies to work.

I run the R888s on CCW 18x10+18x11 wheels 275/35r18+305/35r18 and they work very nicely for a tire you can drive to and from events -- heck, I drive them every day. Only complaint is the road noise.

I got a quote for $1180 to walk out the door with the R888. Anyone know a good place to buy the Toyos?

My last set came from AIM Tire at Sears Point. You quote beats the prices they list online for those sizes:

$1180 seems like a great deal on new race[-ish] rubber...

Yea the R888 are considered R-compound right, or am I missing something. I want more grip then an standard street tire and obviously they look like they have a lot more rubber on the road on and the solid contact patch in the center will help as well.

Ill have the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 (brand new still waiting for them to ship) for my daily driver tires, the RFTs were good but the Indy's are cheaper and newer and from what the Luke @ Tirerack said even better.

The 2nd set of wheels may get graced witht he R888s unless someone gives me another option.

Nitto looks to make me go smaller in width which i wouldn't want to do, rather go larger and thinner, seems like that makes more sense.

Still waiting on a quote for the yokohama's from another shop around here. But they are the Neova Ad08 not the ones that almost look like the R888, so i think the R888 would be the best grip tire that will fit on my wheels, but I am always ready to learn and if there are other tires im not considering.

I'd go with R888s over AD08's.

Check out John Berget racing tires (jbtires) and Todd Zimmer for great prices on lightly used r-comps (scrubs).

Todd Zimmer - phone 414-543-5665

In the future, try to find some wider wheels. They will allow wider tires in easier to find sizes for even more grip. CCWs are good quality and a good value, but still will cost over $2800 for a set of four.

Well I am trying to make this hobby somewhat affordable right now, and $2800 on wheels id rather not do since what I am working at is seat time right now. I am not trying to shave seconds to get into the most advanced group yet.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts on the R888s. Those seems to be a much more dedicated track tire than the Neova's and from what i have found are cheaper of the two.

If i can get my Firehawk Indy 500's here ill probably use those in July and then look into some R comps for the later months when the $$$ is in better standing.

Thanks for the help to all.

Used race tires are a huge bargain, some I get have not even been used yet, shaved, heat cycled, faster than new, I have ordered many from John, not from Todd yet, great service and killer prices

The R888 is a great way to go, I have not tracked my NOT5 tires yet but just happen to have a set of those 275/19's with around 500 miles on them I will be selling as soon as my new CCW wheels arrive

I want to run my street setup all the time so going to 19x13 with 335 and 18x11 with 295 NTO5(My wheels are a bit wider than needed but I can also run wider R comps later if these become my track wheels)

The NTO5 would be a bit less tire than the R888 and maybe a better step for now, you want to build up to the stickier tires over a bit of time unless you have great natural skills so you have less risk of damaging your car

Note: brake early at first, get setup well and focus on corner exit, easier on brakes and you will get faster, faster Brake pretty hard, in a straight line, then off the brakes as soon as you can, they will last longer, car will be easier to control. etc.....then when you get used to it you can brake later, still harder, more difficult to get your speed just right but that is the fast way(leave the trail braking for later when you are very good at this, some do not trail brake at all and are quite fast!)

I ran the Toyo's on my C6, Loved them, loved them so much I never wanted to take them off, went through 2 sets on my C6 and the greatest regret I have going to a C6Z is Toyo does not have anything for it. I used the 295 on the rear, never any issues, I would not be afraid trying the next size up on the rear, 325 I think it is. You will love the Toyo's.
