I personally would not trust a 25 dollar laser. Second problem is checking tire temps with a laser is inaccurate you need a tire temp gauge with a probe.

yep i got one of these at HF when they were on deep sale also figured it would be good

but my michelin slick users manual says it is necessary to use a tire probe as the others are prone to not being as accurate, all depends how **** you want to get on some of this stuff

external tire temps are relatively useless unless you're getting them realtime (ie w/ a sensor mounted to the wheelwell to measure on track temps)

Those IR beam ones are still neat to have though, for spot checks of temps on rotors, headers, woodland creatures and really anything else you can point it at.

While it may be fun to check, i would never change my tire pressures or setup based on an IR temp gauge. You really need to see what the inner layers of rubber are doing for that.

My kids use mine more than I do.
But I now know the ambient temperature of a rock in June.

I don't find IR temps useless at all, as long as you KNOW what you are measuring. You really only need temps on one side to get a grip on pressure, and most tracks have a corner leading onto the pit lane that will suffice. I know in DE's, Club Racing, people often want to do a cool down lap, but serious racers will come in hot, and IR can be useful.

PLUS, they are awesome for tracking down cold cylinders (just shoot the header tubes) and other heat issues. I've been using mine lately to measure the effectivness of the insulation I put in my trailer (1/4" foam reduced roof temp inside from 150F to 90F, without the AC on). Plus as Scott mentions.....the kids LOVE lasers!

for 25 bucks it doesnt have to be perfect. it jsut has to show that one side is f--cked up and that lets you know you need to adjust the pressure :-P

even coming in the pits and turning left or right will affect temps.
