Default Time for pads - is the XP12/10 too much for HPDE?

Someone mentioned on here that the difference between the XP12/10 combo vs the XP10/8 combo would be neglible for HPDE people. In the 8 track days using the 12/10s, I have never exceeded them. Just curious if they are worth the extra money? I tried a set of the PFC99s, but they wouldn't last a whole session before they started fading badly.

Thoughts?

Thoughts:

I've seen the 10/8 combo recommended by a lot of posters but for sure quite a few of them were not in Black (advanced) run groups. There was a 2001 Z in my intermediate group on a hard-on-brakes track running 12/10. He ran out of pad and I gave him some Wilwood J--he gave me the impression after tracking it that there was not a huge difference. So I'm thinking the 12/10 is similar to the wil H and not overkill if you are running decently hard at a hard-on-brakes track and I'm assuming Rcomp tires or even slicks.

If still running yellow gp (especially if on street tires) I would try the 10/8.

From the research that I have done thus far many DE guys like them. There are many variables involved though. I just ordered a set of XP12/10's. I ordered them in the shoe version as apposed to paddlets - curious what others think about the shoes. I have been running th EBC blues - a new compound and like them. i am and intermediate/advanced driver

You didn't mention what tire you are running, but for R Comp tires, the XP12/10 combo works fine. For street tires it may be too aggressive.

I run 12s all around on my GT-R and it works fine, not too aggressive. I run them on the street as well. I ran my last session at grattan on street tires and 12s otherwise i run them with 888s, obviously I wasnt going too hard on the brakes since I was limited by my tires, but I think 12s are fine. I was thinking of going to 16s next. I tried the 8s before the 12 but never 10s. I like the wearability of 8s more, seems like 12s are wearing out faster but it just very well could be my increased comfort level and seat time.

Sorry - forgot to include signature. I am still on stock tires (PS2s), but I am working on improving my skills to graduate to track tires. Hopefully I can get there by the end of year. Car is '02 Z with forged 402 with ~460rwtq. Suspension is stock except for Pfadt adj shocks. I run intermediate classes at all my track events.

Klr Ryd - How many track days did you get out of your 12's. What was your rotor life like?

Street tires the 10/8 combo is probably ok.
With the 12/10 combo you'll be modulating the brakes to keep it right at the abs trigger.

For HPDE, any kind of track brake works fine. Get what is cheapest and lasts the longest.

Just a side note, I recently switched back to Wilwood H's, from XP12's and I notice the H's take quite a bit more time to heat up and work properly. I overshoot several brakes zones while waiting for the pads to come into their temp. I notice the Carbotechs work immediately, but burn away much quicker. The H pad is advertised as an endurance pad taking longer to build heat, but overall lasting longer.

I did note it took a good 4-5 laps before I had confidence like the XP pads, but after 5+ events, I am barely 50% through them and would have eaten through almost 2 sets of XP pads. For the price, I am going to stick with H's and just deal with the warm up issues.

For sure, hopefully longer especially with those tires. My advice especially for HPDE is if you brake just a bit earlier, you will need less pedal pressure and will not eat through the pads as quickly. If you back off a tenth or two, it will pay dividends in how long your pads last.

The less you use your brakes and the more focus you put on corner speed your lap times will go down.

I ran the 10/8 on my 5 de, then ran 12/10 on my 10 de. I could tell a lot difference. I have 5 sets of used ones that still have about half to three quarters of pad left on them. PM or call me if you are interested. I was running on nitto invo tires. 540-309-0925 The pads I have for sale are 12/10

For HPDE I would run the 10's up front. I don't notice much better bite between the 12 and 10, but the 10's last way longer.

I only run 10/8, no reason for anything else!

My last set was the 10/8 combo, worked fine, and didn't take long to warm up. the front 10 did wear out pretty quickly though, I've already had to replace them. Didn't count the number of track days, a combination of Road Atlanta, VIR but mostly Roebling Road. Intermediate Driver. C6 Z51 TOYO 888 for tires

I'm going to NCCAR next month. I've asked around and at intermediate level on Nitto NT-05s, most are recommending the 10/8 combo. I've been using PFC Z-rated from Autozone. They are a good pad for the money but dust pretty bad. I'll try out the 10/8 and see if I can tell the difference.

NCCAR is easy on brakes, the carbotechs dust a lot as well.
You aren't going to find a race pad that doesn't dust.

As others said, a 10/8 combo is great for street oriented tires.
