My rookie NASA racing weekend at Infineon
Just completed my first two ST2 races this weekend with my provisional license. It happened to be at the most difficult and unforgiving track in California, Infineon Raceway (Sears Point). I only started driving this track this year because I wanted to have enough car control skills to avoid all the concrete walls. I ran TTS and ST2 Sat and Sun. We had 3 ST2 cars signed up and all 3 of us raced on Sat. But on Sun, the firebird threw a rod spewing oil all over the track and he was done. And the Porsche was racing 2 groups and must have been too tired for the Sun race.
Here are a couple vids. The first one is time trialing in the normal track configuration. The Vimeo video is of my Sunday race using the Indy car configuration due to oil on Turn 9. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise and I really enjoyed the Indy layout. The race gets more interesting about halfway through when I try to re-pass a bmw with a very good driver. My car and tires just outgunned his.
My racecraft needs serious work, because I have no prior racing experience. I was very happy with my 3-4 day old hoosier A6's gripping all weekend long. And the Carbon Lorraine pads also worked well all weekend with zero fade and no cracked rotors (I think, haven't looked yet). My car has LG coilovers and T1 sway bars but no aero. My friend in the white mustang in the TT video also just received his rookie license so he will be joining me in ST2 next time. We need more cars up here but I think it might start growing.

Very cool Bill. Congrats on the win and the videoa were great. It looked like Sundays race was more of a SM race then anything. Looked and sounded like a bunch of pissed off bees all over the track. Haha

Thanks guys. Racing was a lot more fun than hpde, but felt a lot riskier also. I can see why all the race cars are a little beat up . I was also harder on my car so I think I will be going through parts/consumables a lot quicker.
He was a nice older guy who was on his 4th rookie race. He's putting together a team for the 25 hours of Thunderhill and having a bunch of Daytona pro drivers on his team. He was turning laps about 5 seconds slower than me and asked me not to pass him in Turn 1 (which I have to admit was my plan LOL) and wait until after the carousel. So that's what I did. The miata in front of me had an LS1 and pulled me on the straights pretty bad. He says it's actually a ST2 car and if so I will have my work cut out. The driver is also very good and won a pro mustang challenge race from what I hear.

Nice, smooth driving.
Sears is my favorite, no time to relax, one of the best tracks to race on in the country.
The guy in the Radical really needs to step it up if he's goning to run the 25.
Are you coming up here to run at the end of the month????

Nice driving Bill. I was watcing intently towards the end to see if you would pass the white BMW. Doesn't it feel great to take the checkered!
I can see that you were very cautious on your passing as you should be at this time. That is the only reason the white Beemer got past you in the first place.
I predict in three more races you will be handing out blue paint samples....

Jeez Bill, you gotta post the video where my alternator was giving up the ghost. Good job on the wins, pretty dominant weekend. I'm signing up for TT in November but I'll switch over to ST2 if you make it out or if there are other entrants.
