American Road Race of Champions Update
The first day of the 2010 ARRC Presented by Grass Roots Magazine saw two sessions of qualifying. The final race grid is set with the positions as follows:
1 96 Jerry Onks 1:29.091 (C6 Corvette)
2 38 Bob Mayer 1:29.188 (C6 Corvette)
3 40 David Pintaric 1:29.824 (Viper)
4 59 Robert Finlayson 1:33.262 (C6 Corvette)
5 33 Barry Vincion 1:35.434 (C4 Corvette)
6 47 Edward Lewis 1:35.751 (C6 Corvette)
I had a tough first session that ended up with me being 3+ seconds off the fast guys pace. The is the first time at Road Atlanta since last March, so I was a bit "rusty" to say the least. That last turn sure takes some getting used to!
Bob Mayer had the pole position after the first session, but in the afternoon outing Jerry went a grabbed it from him. I picked up the pace to respectable levels and think I may be able to do well in tomorrow's race.
The grid of Vettes and my Viper is an awesome sight to see. This STO class sure is cool.

Hey guys, got home last night @ 2:30 (after the time change!), so just now recovering.
Great time in Atlanta. I really like the track, but it can be intimidating.
I really had nothing for Jerry in the race. He was consistently faster than me. I was also holding Bob up for those few laps I was "in" the race. Using some old "20/20" hindsight, I should have let Bob past and used him as a "rabbit" to get closer to Jerry. Oh well, next time...
Findlayson's DNF was for mechanicals. When I spun early in the race, he passed me for third place. I chased him down in a few laps, but it appeared he was going much slower than his fast lap time suggests. The guy cannot get a "good" break mechanically!
I have some pictures that I will pst shortly.
Now back to the drawing board for both the car AND the driver. I have much work to do!

Well, I gotta tell you, that race was a blast. STO racing is simply way too cool! These cars are incredibly fast & the guys are who race them are great. If you are thinking about SCCA racing, consider this class.
I made 2 big mistakes this weekend that took away any chance I had of winning. 1) i should have gone out for the second qualifying session, but I was concerned about the reliability of the car for the weekend.
2) I had the worst start I have ever had. (see video). my crew chief and I talked about 2 scenarios to consider at the start to try to beat Jerry to turn 1 and hold off David and Robert. When I came in after the race he said>>>"I don't remember us talking about that one!"
I could get to within .4secs of Jerry (per mylaps) but never close enough to make a pass. Congrats to Jerry for a great race and the WIN!

Racer
totally ignorant of SCCA rules
what class would a NASA PTA car run in? there may be a few of us that want to run this next year (I realize crossing orgs will likely put us in a class where we would get beat like a drum but it's close and would be fun)
