Default C5 Shifting Problem

The T1/ST2 car is causing me pain. When it is cold the gears work fine, on the warm up lap and maybe even a couple of laps the gears work fine. Then it comes out of gear fine but will not easily go into gear (no grinding sounds). The trans cooler seems to defer this problem as does the bleeding of the clutch (love those remote bleeders!) - but it always comes back well before the race/qual/practice ends. It is worse if the car is "loaded" in braking or pulling G. It has a new C6 shift mechanism and base. It is not a gate problem.

It has a T1 legal clutch (ZO6 I think?) with less then 20 days on it (I think), the clutch master looks new, I think the trans was fresh last Sep (need to check with previous owner) and makes no noise at any time.

I need to fix it before Road Atlanta in Dec or else I will be eaten alive in ST2 running only in 4th....

Help appreciated...

Jeff... I would check out the clutch. I had them go with only a couple of weekends on them. The fingers seperate and cause issues. One other thing that seems to be a big bandaid on clutch issues is to get a bigger clutch master cylynder. I had an AP unit in my car for a while and it helped it out. Danny should be able to point you where to get one.

Can you fix mine too? I had the same problem at Roebling Road this weekend.

Bummer. I want to keep the car T1 legal if possible so not sure if bigger master will work. You will not have that constraint more then likely.

It looks like I need to find a lift and some hands to swap a clutch or at least to pull exhaust and inspection plate.

I am leaning toward the clutch - talked to Danny today.

Just throwing this out there, what fluid are you running? The wrong fluid can cause what you are describing.

Mine was similar in that I could shift a couple times around the paddock and up to 4th, but opposite in that mine would then hang in 4th and not let go.

It was broken bits inside the trans.

I was having that problem on a stock C5 clutch when it was loaded as you described. I could not downshift into 2nd. It was like it was blocked - no grinding. Would go into other gears ok.

I did not have a bleeder on the clutch but did try the method of replacing fluid and pumping the clutch. I replaced the shifter with C6 Z06 and made sure it was aligned per directions. No help. It wasn't every turn at the track but was consistent with certain turns.

I was also having sticky clutch pedal problems.

I replaced the clutch with LS7, master and slave. That solved my downshifting problem.

Trouble shooting at Roebling yesterday confirmed the clutch is the issue. Now I need to pick a lightweight clutch/flywheel and get in by Road Atlanta.

My shifting problem was caused by a broken tab inside the clutch. Thanks to sperkins for the fix.
