Default Camera with data overlay options

What are the options today for video systems with data overlaid on video (tach, speedo, brake / throttle position, etc)?

The more flexibility in the input signals the better, and GPS integration for track position is useful. I'm thinking under $3k. Any links to your videos with said systems would be helpful.

Thanks!

RLC with a Chasecam looked the best.
Race Logic has a good setup - DL1/Dash1 w/their video setup.
Also Traqmate and a Chasecam (a bit more limited for analysis, but might be adequate for you).

www.smartycam.com -- works standalone _and_ integrates with the AiM dash/DAQ systems.

The newest and I think better one is the Video VBOX:

I have them in stock and use them everyday for our Corvette school.

Default Nice

I am using Traqmate for logging, GoProHD for movie and TrackVision for movie generation. I like the HD format of the camera and how I can make nice overlays to the movie.

But one kit is of course easier than three systems to connect.

I am a simple soul so I stuck a brake LED, a speedo and a rear-vision mirror in front of the camera.

(actually two speedos - the little HUD on the windshield is readable in the 1024p video)

(could hang some fluffy dice from the rear vision mirror to log lateral G's too!)

I put a brake light Led in front of my camera too! Best $2 I spent on racing parts!

Now I have a DL1 which has GPS and accelerometers which makes it more accurate in faster transition sections. You can also wire in a lot of additional sensors.

The Video 4 add on looks pretty nice.

I'm hoping to end up with something equivalent to this. I'm working my way up to it; just ordered the GoPro HD a couple days ago.

Does the Traqmate accept OBD II data? I'm thinking several of the OBD II parameters would be very informative. For example, throttle position, brake position, steering position, yaw sensors, etc. If the TraqMate can't do this, then I wonder if I could integrate the GoPro and TrackVision with something like an RLC Micro-Pod (which does accept OBD II inputs).

We use the smartycam, it connects to the MXL Pista and can be configured to show any of the connected sensors (oil pressure, water temp, diff temp, etc.). Here is some footage from Sebring a few weeks ago with HSR.

The smartycam itself is $999, it can be used alone or with your with the AIM MXL. Of course by itself it wouldn't show tach, pressures, temps, or gear position. I thimk the MXL system starts at about $1999 for the base setup and then depends on what you want to add to it.

The SmartyCam, if I understand correctly, can be connected to an '06+ C6 OBDII port directly (just like the MXL dashes) where you would get a lot of sensors -- I say this because my MXL Pista on my '06 is just connected to my OBDII port and that gives me tonnes of data to look at. I plan to get a SmartyCam at some point, my experience with AiM has been great as they've even dug through the data stream to get more sensor data supported for me.

It seems that the smartycam is not compatible with the C5 ECU. Is that correct?

Last I knew, but you might contact one of their dealers to double check me. jeff@optimummotorsports.com was really helpful, responsive and easy to deal with when I was researching all things AiM. I believe the reason is that the C5 (and '05 C6) OBDII port doesn't offer the high-speed CAN bus making it too slow to get enough data off it to be worthwhile, but I could be entirely wrong there. :-)

Bob - No, I dont think Traqmate has ODBII connectivity. I have a rpm signal that I have not yet connected in this car but I use in my M3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT78Gdkpqxk

Flinky ... what brake LED ? I don't see anything lighting up when you brake?

The new'ish DRIFT HD170 is nice in that it incorporates a mini monitor and rotating lens/camera assembly, so that you can easily frame up your shot and level it. You can also plus or minus the exposure so that you can properly balance your exposure inside and out.

BUT ... I had to test THREE of them before I got one that was sharp! We think B&H Photo Video just got a bad batch of cameras. The one I got locally, from a distributer, not a store ... was fine. It was a mad scramble to get a good one in time for the BRIDGESTONE commercial that we're about to shoot. We're shooting mainly on film, but use mini cameras for certain shots.

http://www.driftinnovation.com/

The little remote is also nice

... but basically I'm a GoPro evangelist. They really are the sharpest. And with the new firmware update, they have LiveView. The new clip on monitor will be available in January.
