Default Coilovers: best buy for the $

Ready to do coilovers on my c6z06. Whats the preferred brand or the best buy for the dollar and weight? Was waiting for the new phat`s but at $4900.00 no way for me.

Thanks

I have KW V3, click on my "My Corvette photos" for pics. They were $2900 installed and car aligned.

I really like my DRM Bilstein coilovers (http://dougrippie.com/?p=439). Non-adjustable but I haven't cared, honestly. Hard to go wrong at $1795 + shipping. There are so many options out there. I'll say again, what I've said before: They all work, it's really up to you to talk to the vendors and make sure you find somebody that'll deliver a set that makes the car feel the way _you_ like it.

Penske (HardbarUSA, Phoenix), Pfadt, LGM (G2 and GT2 variants), DRM, Moton, MSI's QA1s. The KWs mentioned above. The Calloway/Eibach -- which don't remove the leafs. So many options...

I thought kw v3's were just leaf helpers? What are your spring rates? How much was the kit?

There's a lot of stuff out there, but the better shocks aren't cheap. Shocks are like hookers, you never want to go near a cheap one. Expensive ones cost a lot, but are probably worth it....

If you are going to spend the money on coilovers just don't go cheap. Look seriously at the Penskes, Gary (HardbarUSA)has a very good price on the ones that he has an exclusive on. If I didn't have a the annual GDP of a small country already invested in my DA Koni's I'd be going there.

How many sec off your lap time at a big track like VIR does one get from changing from a stock suspension (C5Z or C6Z) to say the Penske's? Curious how big of a difference suspension makes. I heard hear that T1 bars alone for the C5 with slightly better shocks still wouldn't net 2 sec lap time.

What is your intended use for the coilovers? Autox? Track? How much autox/track/street? Dual use? You like to tinker/test/tune? You like to install and "set it and forget it"?

Perhaps you can share with us what your experience is and what you're looking to improve with the coilovers?

Be good,
TomK

Yep, me too on the DRM Bilstiens. Awesome value and great service after the sale...dumb questions and other BS...never had an issue with the product.

Went with LG's (the Bilstein version). They are real aluminum shock with seperate gas chamber made by top reputable company. If I had the bucks, the Penske or Moton's would be great, but I think the LG Bilsteins are the closest to those in quality or the price. I think the cheaper steel no name Pfadts are exactly that. Can't comment on DRM, but never heard anyone say anything bad about them.

A few really good ones out there depending on how high your wallet is. I've used the LG coil overs for more than 3 years of racing and continue to be impressed with their performance.

DRM. We set them once and have never messed with them again. I have run tight tracks and big HP tracks and never a problem.

Personal experience
T1 or Pfadt competition bars = 1.5 to 2 seconds a lap
LG coilovers = 1.5 seconds a lap
getting the LG's set right = 1.5 seconds a lap
Motons out of the box = 2 seconds over all this
so Pfadt bars with Motons = 6.5 seconds faster
All else being the same (read track tires) at tracks like The Glen and Mosport, all good stuff, how fast you want to go is only limited by what you can afford

Thanks for the info, been out of town could not respond.
Car is used for track only. TTU with NASA and some HPDE4.
If I gain 2 seconds at VIR that would be great!

Hey Wally,
You are going to be proud of me, stripped interior except for dash, and removed exterior A/C components. 110lbs total. What`s your take on the coilovers since you volunteered to do the setup.

Just converted to the LG GT2 from stock springs and phadt adjustables on my C5 coupe. I shaved off about a half second at Summit Point main circuit. Was it worth it? Not really IMO. Just because the car feels stiffer, doesn't mean it handles better. Unfortunately that's what most use as their guage for hanlding.

C6Z comes with a great set up from the factory. Don't mess with it!

I think tying a lap time drop to coilovers is pretty silly. There is no way to say that this modification allotted me this amount of time on track.

What you can say, is that they tend to make the car more predictable and easier to drive, allowing you to drive harder, and thus faster.

Gil: Is the navigation out too? I am proud man, 110 pounds is nothing to laugh at. I bet theres more in there too.

What laptime improvement would have made the change worth it to you?
