Anyone run NASA super unlimited class here?
Just wondering what types of cars are generally in the class, lap times, HP, etc. Post up pics of your cars if you dont mind.
Thanks.
Thanks.

In NorCal SU is often STx cars that just don't have a current dyno sheet. There are a couple that come over from NASA ITE that can't meet the ST1 power:weight, though. And, yeah, like AU N EGL said, the stock cars.

While I realize you asked about SU, let me tell you about my experience at the NASA Mid Ohio event in August. I almost ran SU because there weren't "enough" ST1 cars entered. It turned out that some of the SU entries were really ST1, so we got 4-5 cars to run ST1.
Three of us ran together pretty much nose-to-tail on Saturday and Sunday. Some of the closest racing I had all year.
My point? Try to fit into ST1. The 5.5 ratio means you have a pretty serious LSX motor in a Corvette. 5.49 (equalling SU) is just that much more "over the top."
Just my (not so) humble opinion.
To answer your original question: SU is like SCCA's GT1 class. So awesome cars that are very well deleloped, and some others that just aren't fully sorted quite yet.

Some contingency tire farmers will alternate between ST1 and SU depending on the number of entries. I've seen many ST1 cars win in SU and take home some free Hoosiers.

Well unfortunately "detuning" just goes against every moral fiber of my being. (work with me I'm a tuner)
Actually, I think I know the tricks well of how to keep HP down and TQ way up, and I can play that game I guess, but I already built the engine and kind of wanted to leave it alone before I tore it down before I even started it up. It's not an incredible build, just an LS7 cammed, maybe 550-575 RWHP, but finished is finished...

I would certainly like to be in a more competitive style racing, which specifically why I asked. I do not need to win every time, (but it would be nice from time to time) but I do not want to be the slowest car out there getting lapped by big money builds and equal or much better drivers. I think I can hold my own at least mid pack with somewhat equal builds, so I want to fit in where I'm best suited for myself and the other drivers in the series. I have dominated HPDE's in the past, and if I fall short I'll just buy titanium lug nuts, but I want to use that as a back up plan, and not show all my cards right out of the gate.
The issue I have at the moment is that my car is about 2600lbs (gutted C6) without driver, so I would either have to add alot of weight, eat a bunch of donuts, or really drop the power down to compete in ST1. Neither of which I would like to do, but like I said, I want to properly fit into the class I choose to race in, so if thats the best choice then so be it.
Thanks for the suggestions.

A little de-tuning and a few hundred pounds of weight mounted really really low (I have sheets of lead that are perfect). Maybe run 275's all around for a ratio break, and see what happens. Get creative

The problem with SU is most of the time (except the bigger tracks) it's a filler class and the cars aren't that fast. In fact I was forced to run SU at Putnam last year (car count) and won both days (4 cars) in a ST2 car and if you look at Nationals in SLC I believe the ST1 cars were leading the SU cars for quite a bit.
I would guess you will do very well in your local races and never have a chance to battle and work on your race craft until a big race like Mid Ohio Nationals and at that point it will be to late.
ST1 is not far off SU, but a ST1 and a SU car will battle differently than two ST1 cars, at least that's how I race, I don't race the same way against a ST1 car as I do against a fellow ST2 car to me it's not worth the risk.

TTU(ST1) 1:57.439 vs TTR (SU) 1:58.385
ST1 1:58.184 vs SU 1:58.358

Mid Ohio (PRO)
TTU 1:26.639 vs TTR 1:33.868
ST1 1:29.205 vs SU 1:27.498
My point being in SU you will have enough car to beat almost everything that shows up but something always could show up that you have no chance against, in ST1 that is less likely to happen. If someone bought a used C5R and ran unrestricted it would be in SU or a ex indy car or something wild

So the general consensus I'm getting so far is;
I can run SU and would probably do ok, but you never know when an outdated Formula one car might show up and there's no contest, and the car count is less. Also a less chance of closer, "earned" racing. (so to speak)
ST1 seams to be what most here are leaning towards for the best racing in general, but I have some work to do. David, I might contact you for some sheets of lead if you do dont mind. (or the place where I can purchase them)
Thanks for your opinions guys, please keep them coming if your just checking this thread out now.

Hey Doug,
I ran TT (not w2w) in both EMRA and CART this summer in ST1 and most guys were running about 1:14-1:15 on NJMP Lightning (I figured it would help to give you info on a local track). The NASA time are about the same for that class.
A guy in GT1 (SCCA) ran some kind of Corvette down to a 1:07. Not sure if it was a world challenge type car or not, but that is not anything near a stock Corvette. I think GT1 is the equal of TTU.
Another perspective is that I ran a 1.12.1 in my mostly stock C6Z with coil-overs, T1 sways, stock motor (of course your tune with intake and exhaust) and OEM brakes with XP12's at 3115lbs (without driver).
So, what does this mean. My car is set up pretty good at this point, but I don't think with even another 100hp, I could get down to 1.07 without some SERIOUS weight loss and big dollar suspension...and even then.
1.07 on Lighting is extremely fast.

GT1's are tube frame cars (EX trans am cars) with 650-800hp. they are purpose built race cars. they are NOTHING like a modified corvette.
Doug..the place for your car is ST1. You will need to be around 3025lbs to be legal (with 550rwhp), but remember by the time you add a driver and his equipment, gas and a cool suit you will probably be up in the 2850-2900 lb range. So add 150lbs of lead>>>where YOU want it and you are there. You could also limit HP thru a restrictor.
Your car will be ultra competitive.
If you sign up for SU you never know what wil show up. At the last nationals at Mid Ohio 2 C sports racers and a DaytonaPrototype ran.
Its just a catch all class for all the cars that don't fit a group.
Good luck.

In my opinion this is the key statement. One race you'll have 10 comparable SU cars and have a hell of a good time, the next weekend you'll have half of that, and they will be all over the map in terms of speed (based on driver and car together). The top guys are FAST FAST FAST. The rest are random filler cars that have been mentioned above.
We get SU cars getting mixed up in our ST2 races all the time. Seems a bit odd to me...
ST1 (at least in the Great Lakes region) seems to be a bit more consistant, with similar skills and similar car preps. And the guys know each other and hang out and drink beer together after the race, which is really what it's about.

No, we've been running naturally aspirated all year.
The 1:25.9 we turned on Thanksgiving weekend at Road Atlanta was with the Black C6Z 480cu.in engine through a Fast 102 intake. (you can see the Fast Intake peeking out of the hood)

I got the lead at a metal junk/salvage yard. They told me it had been used in nuclear reactors for shielding......who knows. I don't have that much of it, just suggesting you ask around. Even if you can find chunks of it (they had a 55gal barrel of lead tire weights), it has a low melting point and is easy to pour into simple molds.
btw, I don't think it would be very practical to ship it!
