Default VIDEO: Stock 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 1:47.35 @ CMP

Hey guys - even though I'm now working on only Dodge stuff, I'm still a Corvette guy at heart and still lurk here often.

I thought some of you might enjoy seeing Mike Skeen flog a 2011 Challenger SRT8 around CMP. This is bone stock with the new 6.4L HEMI and running on Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar street tires (245/45/20F and 255/45/20R).

Car weight without driver before the test: was almost exactly 4000 pounds(!!!!!!!).

GRAND-AM has our minimum race weight at 3200 pounds, our cage will weigh about 160 pounds, so we have a lot of work to do!

Enjoy.

Great images. The motor sounds would be better than the music for me.

Yep - GoPro HD's on the car. Audio was nothing but wind noise. We're testing again next week and have an elaborate plan to capture much better engine sounds. We also have the car down to 3400 pounds - closer at least to where it will end up.

The brakes are pretty huge and held up okay. It was the tires that gave up quickly - after 9 laps we corded the left rear. Had to run them over-pressure to keep them from rolling off the wheels under all that mass!

such skinny tires on such a monster, they didn't have a chance. I assume dubs aren't needed for brake clearance?

Not in 2011, Jeff. If we add a second car as planned for 2012, I hope to find my way into the drivers seat during the year, but my job is engineering and building a car that can run up front. Skeen is our only confirmed driver for 2011, we're chatting with a few others but nothing in stone yet.

We are required to run 18's for GRAND-AM and 275/35/18 Continental Race tires. They will clear the OEM brakes and that's what we'll have on the car next week - it looks pretty silly since the race tires are a full 4 inches smaller in diameter than the stockers!

I know they struggled in 2010 with the Challenger. Sounds like they put a too team in thus year. You running at Daytona this month?

No, we got a really late start on the year: won't even pick up our first body in white for a couple more weeks. We'll probably only run 2 or 3 GA races in 2011 - VIR should be our first on May 13/14. We may do some NASA enduros here and there for testing though.

Challenger is a tough nut to crack in this series - it will be the biggest, heaviest car on track. But, we've got a really solid team put together to make it happen - so I'm optimistic.
