Forgot how much fun World Challenge was!

I forgot how much fun the Corvette World Challenge car really was.
This transmission in the video is a normal corvette transmission with a 5" clutch. the clutch has to be used on each shift, up and down.
Thanks
Lou G

Drifting
Lou, I have raced Sebring for twenty years, but still love to watch you get around the place. Awesome! Love the way that W/C car jumps off the corners and pulls revs.
Hope to see an LGM car back racin' soon!

Maybe 30 years ago or a historic F1 car
no plans for this season yet. still working on a couple of deals but nothing for sure yet. I will be at the Spectre 341 hill climb again and working on a racing/TV show that might come together.
you never know.
Thanks for the props guys also.

Great video thanks for sharing.
Am I confused or does it seem like when you downshift quickly you go through two gears instead of skipping one ? Ie 5th-3rd it seems like you are shifting into 4th too just for a second.
I could think of two reasons for this - you are using the engine braking to save the mechanical brakes a bit, and also it seems like you are not needing to throttle blip very much so maybe you bring it down this way to lower the shock to the rear tires ? I'm thinking those little clutches help with reducing drivetrain momentum ?
Please enlighten us on what you're doing there.

The car gets all the stopping done in a real short distance that takes only about 3.5 seconds.
So if you try to skip gears on the down shift most people would not get the RPM's right and severely upset the car and possibly lock the rear tires. (things happen much slower in a Street car or Street Stock class.
For me it is a matter of rhythm heading into a corner like that and down shifting...Bam.... Bam.... Bam and you are in the correct gear for the mid corner and corner exit.
If there was a way to accurately hit the perfect RPM needed for 2nd gear, some drivers might do it that way.
But my personal preference is to slice through each gear and keep a rhythm. It will be the same every lap. On the World Challenge car, we used 5th gear as a top gear and removed 6th to save rotating weight. So we only had to go down from 5th to 2nd.
You ought to check out the ALMS car video at road Atlanta going into turn 10a. Coming down that straight at 165+ in 6th gear and having to get the car slowed down and into 2nd gear to leave the corner. 4 full down shifts in a couple seconds
THe ALMS Corvette uses a Sequential transmission so there is no way to skip gears and again, I would not skip gears any way. (I did skip one time from 4th to 2nd on the first lap going into turn 3 just because there was a car on my bumper and I moved left to block the Red Viper.
You are right about the small clutches, they don't have much flywheel effect, so you can easily buzz through the gears real quickly on the down shifts.
oh yeah, as for the brakes, their job is to stop the car and the engine really doesn't like to be "Zinged" up on a down shift. We don't try to use the engine to brake the car. That is when things break.
Keep in mind that if you go from a normal clutch to a 5" Carbon unit, you can late brake better because the normal heavy flywheel will not decelerate as well.
Hope that helps
Thanks

Thats Cool I wanted to dump my 5.5 clutch when I switch to a bigger engine slower reving engine. I wanted to be able to take it out on the street, and maybe an autox for fun. After watching & reading this that sounds like probably not a good idea.

Yes, this car uses the clutch every shift. Up and down.
the small 5.5" carbon clutch helps the engine to slow down fast enough to help the gears engage. Plus the small clutch on braking makes matching the revs so much easier.
Probably zero chance of any World Challenge this year. And only a slight chance for Rolex GT
So far though we do have an invitation to do a TV show with our Rolex Corvette on steroids in a unique format.
Not like the FORZA Showdown because I will be driving my self. And all the races will be on Road courses that we all know.
But the format will be more like Pinks all out where 16 cars will start the event each week, racing match races in each bracket until there are just 2 cars left for a shootout.
First TV broadcast will be Sat March 26th at 2:pm Eastern time on Verses TV.
More info on these events as we get the info. At this point there will be 10 events on Verses TV all shown delayed broadcast.
Should be fun and the rules are pretty open.
We will keep you posted as we get the updates.
Thanks
Lou G
The car in my Sig will be the car but with our own GT Rear wing and our own Louvered hood. Tires TBA, Brakes PFC, Engine LS3 from our own shop.
