Default Options for street/autocross tires

Finally sold the Snowbowl...Stuperbowl...ahh...SuperBowl tickets for what we paid for them so now I can buy the autocross tires. I need a street/autocross tire since I'll be driving on these tires to and from the event site (about 30 miles round trip) and no I don't want to trailer the car or the tires. I was running Kumho MXs on stock C5 wheel sizes. I like the Kumho XS but don't seem to have the correct size/stagger for the stock setup. The only other tire I can find which will fit my needs is the Nitto NT-01. Any other tires to consider?

Do you have a spare set of wheels that you'll mount these to or will these tires be your everyday tires too? I've heard good things about the NT-01 and I think you'll be happy with them if you stay with stock C5 sizes. I run Nitto NT555 RIIs on my 01 C5Z, 275/40-17 front and 305/35-18 rear and I'm very pleased with them. Just remember since they are a soft compound they will wear faster than a standard street tire.

I have a set of chrome repro C5Z06 wheels with Kumhos on them for some street bling. Unfortunately the combination of larger tires, wider wheels and chrome makes EACH corner combo about 25lbs heavier than the stock size tires and wheels. That's 100 lbs of unsprung weight. Like I said only for street bling.

Repro wheels will typically be heavier than OEM wheels. You might want to look for a set of Z06 Speedline wheels; they are an OEM wheel and are very strong.

Have you looked at the Nitto NT05? It's more of a street tire and is as good as the Kumho XS and probably better in the wet. For a street tire class, this might be the best choice if you can get stock sizes. Treadwear is shown as 200 and A for temperature and AA for traction.

I just got a set of NT05's for my 87 in 275/40-17 from Discount Tire Direct. $600 delivered to my door (free shipping and no sales tax) from Las Vegas. I think they weighed about 26 lbs each.

The NT01 is listed as a competition tire and would most likely not last very long on the street. You should also check to see if the NT01 would put you in a different class. In our association, if a tire is advertised by the manufacturer as "for competition use" it takes you out of a stock class.

Bridgestone RE-11s are a great street AutoX tire.

What size would you run? True I have a C4, but I run XS and lover them. at 34 Front, 32 Rear, they aren't that far off of my V710's which I run at 28 Front, 24 Rear.

I'd run stocks sice 245/45/17 and 275/40/18. Fast guys in my class already run Hoosiers or Nittos; Kumho MXs outclassed against them.
Kumho XS not avail in rear stock size.

SCCA allows DOT R comps in stock solo classes. However you can often find a street tire index class in most associations so you don't have to have a set of A6's lying around. Do what C4cruiser suggested and check with your association on what rules they enforce.

Edit: any competitive non R comp will not last more than one summer of daily road use and autocross...just FYI.

I've been pretty happy with Bridgestone RE11s. Would have bought Hankook RS3s but they weren't available at the time in my size. The fastest times on street tires at the autoXs I attend are on these 2 tires. The RE11s wear very well on the street and work well in the rain.
Edit: I get ~12K miles from my RE11s (~8-10autoXs, 6-10 track days &10K mles/year). They have a rounded shoulder profile so you can run a wider size with fairly aggressive alignment without uneven wear).

The previous advice given about checking your local rules is a good idea. The RE01 will most likely have you running in the same class as people running A6s and you won't be competitive (if that is important to you).

I have had good luck with the Nitto RE05s on my C6. One major advantage to the Nitto is that you can reverse them, so you can balance out the wear. This makes them last a lot longere.

You can run the 285/35/19 just fine in the rear. I run 295/35/19 Hoosier A6's and they don't stick out but just a smidgin.
