Default Nitto -VS- Nitto

I'm sure some of you old hands get tired of newbys asking the same questions but, I'm asking anyway.

Does anyone have an opinion on the merits of Nitto NT 555R Extreme Performance - vs- Nitto 555Rii Roadrace tires for autocross?

Thanks

Les

Nitto makes several "555" tires:

NT555 - this is the street tire, treadwear 300
NT555R - this is the Drag radial
NT555RII - this is the track tire (streetable track tire)

Of these, I would think, the one you want for AutoX is the 555RII. I have used the RII quite a bit on road tracks, its a very nice tire. I have not AX'd it though. I have not ever driven the drag radial but it seems to me the side walls would be to soft for AX use.

Thanks Brad.

I ordered a set of the 555 RIIs.

The story I got from Discount Tire is that the Drag Radials have too soft side walls for AX and that both the 555R Extreme Performance and 555 RIIs have stiffer side walls but, the 555 RIIs have a much stickier compound. I'll find out on the 13th.

Thanks again.

I run the 555 RIIs for HPDE. I'm very pleased with them.

Likewise, I run the Nitto 555RII and will continue using them in HPDE's. No problems in dry weather.

Have you had a chance to use these at an autocross yet? I have recently emailed Nitto asking them what the optimum tire temperatures are for these tires. Tire temps at HPDE and those seen at autocross events are vastly different. I'm worried the 555RII's will require too much heat to get sticky on an autocross course. I ran Kuhmo V710's on my old cobra and the highest temperatures I recorded were in the 118-120* range and I over-drove the hell out of that car. Please post any findings you may have on these.

I liked the 555RII for all uses, they were the normal tire on my C4, I've pulled a 1.6 60' at the drag strip, ran HPDEs with them, I liked them in the rain and on the street. Great all around tire.

The 555 RIIs aren't as good as the Nitto NT-01 for autox, or for the track, I don't think. They get greasy when they get hot.

On the other hand, I like the 555 RIIs as a street tire. They actualy wear fairly decently.
